The Druid is the Diablo 4 class that switches between werewolf, werebear and earth and storm magic within a single fight. It is one of the five base game classes, so you can play it without any expansion. This guide explains how its Spirit resource works, what Spirit Boons are, how the skill tree looks after the Lord of Hatred rework and who the Druid is for. It covers PC and consoles as of 19 October 2026 (patch 3.2.3, Season 15). You will not find builds here, because those change every season.
Class role and fantasy
The Druid is a guardian of the wild. Blizzard describes the class through five themes: wolf, bear, earth, wind and storm. In practice part of your kit turns you into a werewolf or a werebear, while the rest calls on the power of nature, from rocks to lightning. That also explains the damage mix: the Druid deals Physical, Lightning and Poison damage.

How much time you spend in fur and how much casting spells comes down to the skills you put on your bar. The Druid can feel like a melee fighter, an elementalist or a mix of both without ever changing class.
The Druid’s main stat is Willpower. That is what you look for on gear, much like a Barbarian chases Strength and a Rogue Dexterity.
Spirit: how the Druid builds power
The Druid’s resource is called Spirit. You generate it with Basic skills, your simple attacks, and then spend it on stronger abilities. The rhythm of combat is easy to learn: build Spirit with a Basic skill, burn it with a heavier skill, repeat.
Early on, remember that without a Basic skill on your bar you will run dry.
Spirit Boons: four animal spirits
Every class in Diablo 4 has its own class mechanic, and for the Druid that is Spirit Boons. These are passive bonuses from four animal spirits. You pick a boon from each spirit, and you can mark one spirit as Bonded, which gives you two boons from it instead of one.
You do not start with Spirit Boons. The mechanic unlocks through a class quest while you level, so your first hours are about the skill tree alone. We do not list the exact level, because sources disagree after Lord of Hatred. When the quest shows up, do not skip it: Spirit Boons are a passive bonus that stays with your character.
The skill tree after Lord of Hatred
The Lord of Hatred expansion rebuilt the skill tree for all eight classes, the Druid included. Older guides describe a tree that is no longer in the game. The level cap also rose to 70 as part of a free update for all players. Today’s tree has six groups that unlock as you level:
| Group | Unlocks at | What it holds |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | level 1 | simple attacks that generate Spirit |
| Core | level 3 | main skills you spend Spirit on |
| Three class groups | levels 4, 8 and 13 | more Druid skills |
| Ultimate | level 19 | one Ultimate skill, you cannot have more |
An active skill can take up to 15 points. It also has two pairs of Modifier upgrades, where you choose one from each pair, and Variant upgrades. The base game gives each skill two variants, Lord of Hatred adds a third, and you always pick one.
You get one skill point for every level from 2 to 70, which is 69 points in total, plus extra points from Season Ranks. After level 70 progression continues in Paragon, as explained in our leveling and Paragon guide.
Who the Druid is for
- Players who do not want a single role. The Druid fights up close in animal form and casts at range, depending on the skills on the bar.
- Players without an expansion. The Druid is in the base game, so you have it in the Game Pass version too.
- Fans of nature fantasy. Earth, wind, storm and animal spirits define the class from level one.
If pure melee without spells appeals to you more, have a look at the Barbarian. If the animal spirits are what you like about the Druid, the Spiritborn class is a close cousin, but it relies on Dexterity, fights with a glaive or quarterstaff and needs an expansion.
Getting started with the Druid
- Pick a difficulty. If Diablo 4 is your first ARPG, start on Normal; if you know the genre, go Hard. Expert and Penitent are not meant for a fresh character.
- Keep a Basic skill. Without it you have nothing to generate Spirit with.
- Commit to a theme. Put your first points into one style, shapeshifting or spells. Spreading across everything slows you down early.
- Finish the class quest. It unlocks Spirit Boons.
- Continue with Paragon after level 70. From there your character grows mainly through Paragon Boards and gear.

FAQ
No. The Druid is one of the five base game classes along with the Barbarian, Necromancer, Rogue and Sorcerer. You only need an expansion for the Spiritborn, Paladin and Warlock.
Willpower. You prioritise it on gear the same way other classes look for Strength, Dexterity or Intelligence.
Physical, Lightning and Poison. Which one you lean on depends on your skills, because the Druid mixes werewolf and werebear forms with earth and storm magic.
You get one passive boon from each of the four animal spirits. The spirit you mark as Bonded is stronger: it gives you two boons.
