Diablo 4 Spiritborn guide: Spirit Hall and the Guardians

The Spiritborn is the only Diablo 4 class that arrived with the Vessel of Hatred expansion, and you cannot play it without that expansion. The good news: since 28 April 2026 Vessel of Hatred is part of Lord of Hatred, so anyone who buys the latest expansion gets the Spiritborn unlocked straight away. Below you will learn how the Vigor resource works, what the Spirit Hall and the four Spirit Guardians are, which weapons the Spiritborn uses and who the class suits. Everything is current as of 19 October 2026 (patch 3.2.3, Season 15), and there are deliberately no builds or tier lists here.

Where the Spiritborn comes from and what you need to buy

Vessel of Hatred launched on Steam on 7 October 2024. Besides the Spiritborn it added the Nahantu region, Mercenaries, the co-op Dark Citadel and the Party Finder. The Spiritborn is tied to this expansion: without Vessel of Hatred you cannot create one.

Since Lord of Hatred launched, that no longer means two purchases. Lord of Hatred includes Vessel of Hatred, which unlocks immediately after you buy it. Both expansions require the base game. On Steam (Czech store, prices in euros as of 19 October 2026) Lord of Hatred Standard costs €39.99 and the Age of Hatred Collection, with the base game and both expansions, costs €69.99. Every edition and what it contains is covered in our editions and price guide.

A note for Game Pass players: the catalogue only has the base Diablo IV, not the expansions. If you play through Game Pass, you do not get the Spiritborn unless you buy an expansion.

Class role and fantasy

The Spiritborn is a warrior who draws power from spirits. It fights with a glaive or a quarterstaff, and Blizzard also mentions the polearm. It deals four kinds of damage: Fire, Physical, Lightning and Poison. Its main stat is Dexterity, like the Rogue, with which it shares a focus on agility but neither weapons nor mechanics.

The heart of the class is its four Spirit Guardians. In the game they are called Jaguar, Gorilla, Eagle and Centipede. The class mechanic, the Spirit Hall, revolves around them.

Vigor: the Spiritborn’s resource

The Spiritborn pays for stronger skills with Vigor. You generate it with Basic skills, so the simple attack on your bar is not decoration but fuel for everything else.

The Spirit Hall: primary and secondary Guardian

The Spiritborn’s class mechanic is the Spirit Hall. Here you choose a primary and a secondary Spirit Guardian. Both slots can hold the same spirit, so you can go all in on one Guardian or combine two different ones.

The Spirit Hall is not available from minute one. It unlocks through a class quest while you level. We do not give the exact level, because sources disagree after the Lord of Hatred rework. Until then you play with the skill tree alone.

Skill tree and skill points

Lord of Hatred rebuilt the skill tree for all eight classes, so the Spiritborn’s tree today is different from the one in 2024 guides. It has six groups: Basic (from level 1), Core (from 3), three class groups (from 4, 8 and 13) and Ultimate (from 19), and you can only have one Ultimate.

Skill elementHow it works
Skill ranksan active skill takes up to 15 points
Modifier upgradestwo pairs, you pick one from each
Variant upgradestwo variants in the base game, a third with Lord of Hatred; you pick one
Skill pointsone per level from 2 to 70, more from Season Ranks

The level cap is 70. After that comes Paragon with its boards, Glyphs and extra points, as covered in our leveling and Paragon guide.

Who the Spiritborn is for

  • Players who want agile melee. The Spiritborn runs on Dexterity and fights with a glaive or quarterstaff.
  • Players who enjoy combining pieces. Choosing a primary and secondary Guardian in the Spirit Hall is the defining decision of the class.
  • Owners of Lord of Hatred. You get the Spiritborn bundled with the Paladin and Warlock, so you pay nothing extra.

If you prefer a nature theme with shapeshifting and spells and you do not own an expansion, try the base game Druid. If you want Dexterity with two weapons and a bow, the Rogue is closer.

Getting started with the Spiritborn

You create the character like any other, the Spiritborn just has to be unlocked by the expansion. If you have finished the campaign at least once, you can skip it on a new character. On the Seasonal realm you go straight into the season; on the Eternal realm you choose where to start.

Pick the difficulty based on experience: Normal if you are new to the genre, Hard if you know other ARPGs. Complete the class quest for the Spirit Hall along the way and focus your first skill points on a handful of skills instead of spreading them across the whole tree. Once you are comfortable with the Spirit Hall, you can fill the second slot with a different spirit than the first.

FAQ

Can I play the Spiritborn without Vessel of Hatred?

No. The Spiritborn requires Vessel of Hatred. That expansion is part of Lord of Hatred, though, so buying the latest expansion or the Age of Hatred Collection is enough.

Is the Spiritborn included in Game Pass?

No. Game Pass only includes the base Diablo IV; Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred are sold separately.

Which weapons does the Spiritborn use?

The glaive and the quarterstaff, and Blizzard lists the polearm for the class as well. The main stat is Dexterity.

Can I put the same spirit in both Spirit Hall slots?

Yes. The primary and secondary Spirit Guardian can be the same spirit or two different ones.
