God of War 3 Remastered now runs natively on PC thanks to a fan-made port

Kratos’ Greek finale has finally found a way onto Windows. An unofficial, fan-made port of God of War 3 Remastered is now available and runs natively on PC from the opening scene all the way to the final battle – no PlayStation hardware required. On top of that, the project bolts on the kind of features PC players expect: high frame rates, keyboard and mouse support and room for mods.

What the port actually does

Developer Felipe Prado announced the project on Reddit and describes it as playable start to finish. Saves, audio, cinematics, controller input and keyboard support are all working. The feature list goes well beyond “it boots”:

  • a 240 FPS engine patch
  • background shader caching
  • full control remapping
  • automatic save backups
  • optional FSR 1 upscaling
  • cheats and a range of performance options

Prado reports averaging roughly 144 FPS at 1080p on a Radeon RX 6700 XT. The catch is that the project is still in alpha: some textures misbehave at resolutions above 1080p, so you should go in expecting bugs rather than a polished release.

One more important detail – this is not a download-and-play package. The project does not distribute God of War 3 Remastered itself, so you need to supply your own copy of the PS4 game files.

This isn’t classic emulation

The technical approach is what makes this interesting. Because the PS4 uses an x86-64 CPU architecture close to what sits in modern PCs, the original game executable can run directly on your processor. A custom runtime then swaps PlayStation system libraries for Windows equivalents. On the graphics side, a heavily modified version of shadPS4’s video core translates PS4 GPU commands into Vulkan.

Prado compares the result to translation layers like Wine or Proton – the tech behind SteamOS – rather than full-system emulation. Put simply, the project spends less energy convincing your PC that it is a PlayStation and more energy teaching the PlayStation game how to speak Windows.

Part of a bigger wave

Prado’s work builds partly on technology created for a recent Bloodborne PC project, and it lands alongside a growing list of unofficial console-to-PC conversions. Fans have targeted Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Lost Odyssey and P.T. using a mix of recompilation, translation layers and game-specific runtimes. The methods differ, but the appeal is identical: games locked to aging hardware suddenly gain higher frame rates, modern resolutions, keyboard controls and mod support without waiting on their publishers.

Why God of War 3 was stuck in the first place

God of War 3 launched on PS3 in 2010 and was remastered for PS4 five years later, but neither version has ever left those platforms. That gap stands out more and more as PlayStation keeps shipping its catalog to PC – 2018’s God of War hit Steam in 2022 and God of War Ragnarok followed in 2024. The Norse saga is officially playable on PC; the fight against Olympus is not, unless you turn to emulation or a project like this one. If you want to catch up on where the series stands, we collect everything in our God of War coverage.

The timing is notable, too. Santa Monica Studio confirmed earlier in 2026 that the original trilogy is getting a remake, though the project is very early in development with no release date. Meanwhile, God of War Laufey arrives on PS5 on February 16, 2027 with no PC version announced – Sony has reportedly stepped back from PC ports for its single-player titles. We covered the release date and pre-order details in our piece on God of War Laufey.

FAQ

Do I need to own the game to use the port?

Yes. The project does not distribute God of War 3 Remastered, so you have to supply your own copy of the PS4 game files.

Is this an emulator?

Not in the traditional sense. The PS4 executable runs directly on your x86-64 CPU while a custom runtime replaces PlayStation system libraries with Windows ones, and a modified shadPS4 video core translates GPU commands into Vulkan. Prado compares it to Wine or Proton.

What performance can I expect?

Prado reports around 144 FPS on average at 1080p with a Radeon RX 6700 XT, and the port includes a 240 FPS engine patch plus optional FSR 1.

Is it finished?

No. The project is in alpha and still has texture issues at resolutions above 1080p, so bugs are to be expected even though the game is playable from start to finish.

Is an official PC version coming?

Nothing has been announced. Santa Monica Studio confirmed a remake of the original trilogy in 2026, but it is early in development with no release date, and God of War Laufey is currently PS5-only.
