A small gang-war shooter has quietly shown up on Steam and started climbing. Hood Warfare 2 launched on October 8 for $5.99 and sells itself on fast gang battles across a set of Chicago-themed maps. It is a direct sequel to Trapstar Games’ Hood Warfare from 2023, which played out the same premise in Detroit.
The biggest technical change is under the hood: the first game ran on Unity, while the sequel moves to Unreal Engine 5. The core idea stayed the same – gang-flavored combat, several multiplayer modes, and bot support for anyone who does not want to queue against real people.
GTA-style gang war, but packed into short matches
Thematically, Hood Warfare 2 overlaps with a chunk of what Grand Theft Auto does in multiplayer: rival crews fighting over city turf. The difference is the format. This is not an open world you roam – it is a match-based first-person shooter where you drop into a map, fight, and leave. Locations range from downtown streets and suburbs to The Trenches and Chicago Mall.
Six modes, and only one of them is a free-for-all
- Turf War – gangs capture territory and score points for the areas they hold.
- GangBang – straightforward team deathmatch.
- Hit A Lick – a bag works as a capture-the-flag objective.
- Destroy The Block – plant-and-defuse in the Counter Strike mold.
- Chain Snatch – you collect drops from the opponents you take down.
- Chaos – rules-free combat and the only mode that is not team-based.
Turf War is the one leaning hardest into the territory-control formula you know from today’s bigger multiplayer shooters, so if you bounce off deathmatch, that is the mode to try first.
Progression and loadouts
There is more here than plain shootouts. Reputation levels unlock weapons and equipment, weapon challenges open up new attachments, and kills can unlock extra skins. Guns can be modified with sights, magazines, grips, suppressors and several other categories of parts, which leaves room for the kind of loadout tinkering modern shooters are built around. PvP is the focus, but you can also set up matches against bots.
What it costs and how it is doing
Hood Warfare 2 sits at $5.99 on Steam, with a 10% launch discount dropping it to $5.39 until October 15. Three days after release the game was still setting new highs, with an all-time player peak of 2,686 recorded on October 11 – small numbers next to the genre giants, but solid momentum for a budget indie FPS. There is currently no indication the game is heading to consoles.
