Magic: The Gathering Is Reprinting Its Warhammer 40K Commander Decks

If you have spent the last few years watching the Warhammer 40K Commander Decks climb to absurd prices on the secondary market, there is good news. Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that the four precons from 2022 have been printed again and will land at distributors and stores soon.

What Wizards of the Coast actually said

After store owners started spotting the Warhammer 40K precons on their order forms again, Wizards of the Coast confirmed the reprint directly. “Yes, we can confirm that we did a small reprint of the Commander decks that will be available to distributors and stores soon,” a company spokesperson said, adding that “fans and WPN retailers should check with their distributors for availability, as it may vary by region.”

Two words matter there: “small” and “region”. This is not a mass reprint that will flood every shelf, and availability will differ depending on where you live. If you want one, talking to your local store sooner rather than later is the safer play.

The four decks in question

The Warhammer 40K Commander Decks were the first preconstructed decks Magic released under the Universes Beyond banner, pulling directly from Games Workshop’s miniature wargame setting. Each one leans into a single faction:

  • Forces of the Imperium – the Imperial war machine.
  • Necron Dynasties – a mono-black deck built around the undead machines.
  • Tyranid Swarm – the xenomorph-like hive fleets.
  • The Ruinous Powers – the Chaos deck.

They were well received at launch, but they quickly disappeared from retail and migrated to resale listings, where single decks have been going for hundreds of dollars at marketplaces like TCGplayer. Each deck originally carried a $59.99 MSRP.

What this means for prices and collectors

Even a limited reprint adds supply to a market that has had almost none, so there is a decent chance resale prices cool off at least somewhat. More importantly, collectors who simply wanted to play with these decks finally get a realistic shot at buying one.

There are still open questions. Wizards did not confirm whether the all-foil Collector’s Edition versions are part of the reprint, and no pricing has been announced for the new run.

No in-universe versions planned – for now

Before the decks originally launched, Magic’s head designer Mark Rosewater addressed the question of in-universe Magic versions of the Warhammer 40K cards in a blog post: “There are no current plans to make in-universe Magic versions of the new cards in the Warhammer 40K Commander decks (we make in-universe ones for the Secret Lair cards), but we have the capability to do it if needed on a card-by-card basis.” In other words, a card-by-card conversion is possible, but it is not scheduled.

Warhammer 40K is everywhere right now

The timing is no accident. Dawn of War IV brings the RTS series back this December, Total War: Warhammer 40K is lined up for next year, and Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40K cinematic universe is moving forward.

On the Magic side, 2027 is set for six sets, three of which have been confirmed so far, with more Universes Beyond releases still to be announced. We cover the game regularly, so you can follow everything new in our Magic: The Gathering news hub.
