For the processor, Nintendo only says it is a custom chip made by NVIDIA and publishes no further details. The full list is on the Nintendo Switch 2 Specifications page. How Switch 2 compares with other handhelds is covered in our handheld consoles guide.

Two European versions: replaceable or fixed battery

Two versions of the console are sold in the EU. They differ in battery and weight:

  • With a user-replaceable battery: 5172 mAh, 441 g without Joy-Con.
  • With a non-replaceable battery: 5220 mAh, 401 g without Joy-Con. Nintendo support replaces the battery for a fee.

According to Nintendo, battery replacement kits are coming to the Nintendo Store in the future. Where to buy the console and for how much is covered in our Switch 2 price guide.

Dock and TV mode: when 4K and when 120 fps

On a TV, Switch 2 outputs the picture through the dock. The maximum is 3840 × 2160, i.e. 4K, at 60 frames per second. If a game runs at 120 fps, the resolution is 1920 × 1080 or 2560 × 1440. You only get 4K and HDR10 in selected games and with a compatible TV. In handheld and tabletop mode, the maximum is 1920 × 1080.

The choice between resolution and smoothness is up to each game. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, for example, offers Quality (4K at 60 fps) and Performance (1080p at 120 fps) modes in TV mode.

The dock itself measures about 115 × 201 × 51.2 mm and weighs 383 g. It has two USB 2.0 ports on the side, HDMI, LAN and a port for the AC adapter. Thanks to the LAN port you can play on a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi in TV mode. A dock bought separately comes with an AC adapter, a USB-C cable and an HDMI cable.

Storage and microSD Express

Switch 2 has 256 GB of UFS internal storage, part of which is used by the system. You can only expand it with microSD Express cards, up to 2 TB (after a system update).

Regular microSD cards you know from Switch 1 cannot be used for games on Switch 2. It only reads screenshots and videos from Switch 1 on them. Licensed microSD Express cards for Switch 2 are sold by shops that sell Nintendo games, and licensed products carry a symbol on the packaging.

Plan for space with some physical games too: a game-key card holds no game data, only a key to download it, so the game is downloaded to the console’s memory or a microSD Express card, as Nintendo explains in its Switch 2 FAQ. More in our game-key card guide. What else from Switch 1 works on the new console is covered in our backward compatibility guide.

Battery, charging and AC adapter

Nintendo quotes about 2 to 6.5 hours of battery life depending on the game. A full charge takes about 3 hours while the console is in sleep mode.

The console has two USB-C ports. The bottom one is for charging and the dock, the top one for accessories or charging. The Switch 2 AC adapter takes 100–240 V input, outputs up to 20 V / 3 A and has a cable of about 1.5 m. A Switch 1 adapter will charge the console when plugged in directly, but you cannot use it with the Switch 2 dock or for TV mode.

The console’s stand adjusts up to 150°, so you can set it on a table when playing without a TV.

Joy-Con 2 and Switch 2 Pro Controller

Joy-Con 2 attach to the console magnetically. They have a mouse sensor, HD rumble 2 and the new C button for GameChat. The 500 mAh battery lasts about 20 hours and takes about 3.5 hours to charge.

The Switch 2 Pro Controller also has a C button, programmable GL and GR buttons and a 3.5 mm jack. It lasts about 40 hours and charges in about 3.5 hours. Both Joy-Con 2 and the Pro Controller only work with Switch 2.

Power consumption

In TV mode, Switch 2 draws 19 W while playing (Nintendo measured it with Mario Kart World). In the HOME Menu it is 8 W and in sleep mode 0.5 W.
