Nvidia is expanding DLSS 5 beyond its first test case. Roughly a month after the neural rendering tech debuted in NBA 2K27, the company announced in a blog post that it is coming to Hogwarts Legacy and Where Winds Meet in November – and that it runs on a brand new, much faster model.
The new model is supposed to be twice as fast
According to Nvidia, the freshly released DLSS 5 model is twice as fast as the one that shipped with NBA 2K27 last month, and ten times faster than the version the company first showed off at GTC 2026 back in March. NBA 2K27 is getting an update that swaps in the new model, which should directly translate into better performance for anyone who already has the feature switched on.
That speed jump matters more than it sounds. When DLSS 5 was first demonstrated in March, it needed two RTX 5090s to deliver anything close to a playable experience, and even then it was heavily limited. A performance hit that big is the main reason developers were slow to ship it – the tech can only sell itself if you actually leave it enabled while playing.
What it looks like in Hogwarts Legacy
The comparison screenshots Nvidia shared from Hogwarts Legacy are noticeably restrained. Instead of reshaping characters the way the earliest DLSS 5 demos did, the effect mostly comes down to balanced lighting and improved subsurface scattering on skin and materials. Reactions on X/Twitter split along predictable lines: some users pointed out how small the visual difference is relative to the performance cost, while others praised exactly that restraint as the right way to use the technology – an improvement rather than an AI filter slapped on top.
How subtle it ends up being is ultimately a developer decision. DLSS 5 gives studios a long list of dials they can turn, so a game can either keep its original art direction intact or drift into something far more artificial. For now, both NBA 2K27 and Hogwarts Legacy appear to be aiming at preserving the existing look. If you follow the game, we keep a running feed of Hogwarts Legacy news on the site.
What this means for you
DLSS 5 works by using AI to re-draw the image, anchored by the geometry and color data the game itself provides. That approach alone is enough to put some players off, and the honest answer for now is that you’ll want to judge it yourself with the toggle in the options menu once the November updates land.
- NBA 2K27 – gets an update with the new, faster model.
- Hogwarts Legacy – DLSS 5 support arrives in November.
- Where Winds Meet – also getting DLSS 5 in November.
If performance keeps improving at this rate, the list of supported titles should grow well past a couple of showcase games. On the Hogwarts side there’s more on the horizon too – we covered the state of the Hogwarts Legacy 2 project in a separate article.
FAQ
Nvidia says the technology is coming to Hogwarts Legacy in November, alongside Where Winds Meet.
Nvidia claims it is twice as fast as the model that launched in NBA 2K27 last month and ten times faster than the original reveal version from GTC 2026.
NBA 2K27 was the first game with DLSS 5 and is getting an update with the new model. Hogwarts Legacy and Where Winds Meet follow in November.
It uses AI to re-draw the frame while being anchored by the geometry and color data the game provides. In Hogwarts Legacy the result is subtle, mostly affecting lighting and subsurface scattering.
Yes. Studios have plenty of adjustable settings, so the result can stay close to the original art direction or push much further toward an artificial look.
