The Palworld Official Card Game is getting its first genuinely new card type. Bushiroad has revealed the Legendary trait, which debuts in the second set, Legends Awaken, scheduled for an official release on October 30. The card game is based on the monster-catching survival hit from Pocketpair, and if you only know the video game version, you can grab it on its Steam store page.
What the Legendary trait actually does
Pals carrying the Legendary trait come with a deckbuilding and board restriction: you may only have one Legendary Pal with the same name in your Base at a time. The first confirmed Legendary Pal is Jetragon, and its abilities hint that more Legendary Pals are coming – possibly enough of them to form an archetype of their own. Bushiroad has not yet confirmed which other Pals will carry the trait when Legends Awaken ships.
If the rule sounds familiar, that is because Magic: The Gathering uses a comparable idea with Legendary Creature cards, where a player may only control one copy of a given Legendary card at a time and must send the extra one to the graveyard.
How the Palworld TCG plays
The Palworld Official Card Game borrows a number of proven ideas from other trading card games. Its resource system works much like the one in the League of Legends card game Riftbound – you automatically gain Souls each turn, and the player going second receives an extra Soul at the start of the game. Combat leans on games like Lorcana: you choose whether your Pals attack other Pals, Structures, or the opposing player directly. On top of that, the game pulls mechanics straight from the video game, with Pals having specific skills such as Harvesting and Kindling tied to different cards.
Dawn of Palpagos reprint is coming too
The first set, Dawn of Palpagos, launched alongside Red/Blue and Green/Purple Trial Decks and sold out fast. Scalpers moved in and booster box prices climbed sharply. Bushiroad confirmed it is working to get more of the first printing into stores, and that a 2nd Edition reprint of Dawn of Palpagos will arrive in October. The company has also already teased a third set, Eternal Ascent.
