What is Palworld: you catch Pals and they work for you

Palworld is a survival sandbox in which you catch creatures called Pals, build a base and let them do the work for you: mining, extinguishing fires, planting, crafting. Or fighting. The game is made by Japanese studio Pocketpair; it launched in early access in January 2024 and received its full 1.0 release on 9 July 2026. This article explains how it plays and why everyone was talking about it. For how the game turned out after the full release, see our review of Palworld version 1.0.

Catching, building, working

The core gameplay loop rests on three intertwined things. You catch Pals with spheres, much like in other creature-collecting games. You build a base: shelters, workbenches, fields, furnaces. And then comes the part where Palworld does things differently from the rest: you assign the Pals you’ve caught to your base and they work there.

Every Pal has its own work suitability. One can mine ore, another can put out fires, a third can plant seeds or craft at a workbench. Putting together a base crew whose skills fit together is a game within the game, and it’s the main reason you can sink hundreds of hours into Palworld.

Guns nobody expected

The second thing people remember most about Palworld: it has guns. You don’t just catch Pals the nice way; you can weaken them in combat, and you also fight human enemies. That clash between cute creatures and a submachine gun is exactly what earned the game enormous attention right after launch.

Progression also includes Tower Bosses, powerful enemies in towers who move the game forward and unlock new areas.

Solo, with friends or on your own server

You can play through the whole game solo, but it’s built for playing together. You can play co-op with friends or set up your own dedicated server where the world keeps running even when you’re not playing. Palworld also supports cross-platform play, so your group doesn’t all have to be on the same platform.

From early access to version 1.0

Palworld came out on 19 January 2024 on PC and Xbox, where it was in Game Pass from day one. The launch was extraordinary: the game reached a huge number of people and became one of the most talked-about titles of the year. A PS5 version followed in September 2024, and in July 2026 the game left early access with version 1.0.

You can tell it was a big event from how interest spiked at the time: searches related to the game jumped to five times their usual level in July 2026.

Where you can play it

On PC through Steam or Epic Games, on Xbox Series X|S and in Game Pass, and on PlayStation 5, where the PS5 Pro gets an enhanced version. You’ll find details for each platform, including release dates, in our platforms article.

The game costs €28.99 on Steam and nothing extra with Game Pass. For the full list of supported languages, see our article on languages in Palworld.

Who it’s for

Palworld suits people who enjoy building and optimizing: setting up a base, figuring out which Pal fits which job and gradually building a well-oiled machine. If you’re mainly after a story or competitive play, you’ll be disappointed; this game is about building and exploring.
