Magic: The Gathering Adds a Brand-New Card Type in the Star Trek Set – Signed by the Actors

Magic: The Gathering is about to do something it has never done before. The Star Trek set from the Universes Beyond line, which arrives on November 13, 2026, introduces a completely new type of headliner card – and the twist is that a real human being has to sign each one by hand.

Textless foils with a genuine autograph

The new headliners are limited textless foil cards dedicated to seven characters: Kirk, Spock, Picard, Janeway, Seven of Nine, Geordi and Data. Roughly 250 copies exist for each character, and every single one is signed by the actor who played that character on screen. That list includes names as big as Patrick Stewart and Jeri Ryan, and the signatures are real pen-to-card autographs, not printed reproductions.

That’s a notable change from how headliners have worked so far. Normally they’re serialized with numbers from 1 to 500, with exactly one copy of each number in existence. The Star Trek version drops the printed number and replaces it with the signature – which also means no two cards are quite identical, because every autograph is written by hand.

How you can actually pull one

The signed Star Trek cards will not appear in regular Play Boosters. If you want a shot at one, you’ll have to open Collector Boosters and hope luck is on your side. Given roughly 250 copies per character, these will be among the rarest cards in the set.

If you want to keep track of what else Wizards of the Coast is doing with its crossover line, we cover it all in our Magic: The Gathering news section, and we also wrote about the returning Warhammer 40K Commander decks.

The end of an era for Jace Beleren

The Star Trek set follows Reality Fracture, which released on October 2 and closed a long chapter of the game’s history: Wizards of the Coast killed off Jace Beleren. The Blue planeswalker debuted back in 2007 and spent years as the face of the franchise alongside Chandra Nalaar and, more recently, Loot.

What comes next

From November 13 to November 15, Wizards of the Coast is hosting a MagicCon in Atlanta alongside the World Championship. Only part of the 2027 release schedule has been confirmed so far and the Universes Beyond collaborations for that year remain unannounced, so the Atlanta event is the most likely place to hear more about the roadmap. Three new crossovers have already been announced for October 2026.

FAQ

When does the Star Trek Universes Beyond set release?

The set launches on November 13, 2026, just over a month after Reality Fracture, which came out on October 2.

Which characters get the signed headliner cards?

Kirk, Spock, Picard, Janeway, Seven of Nine, Geordi and Data. Each one is signed by the actor who portrayed the character, including Patrick Stewart and Jeri Ryan.

How rare are the autographed cards?

There are roughly 250 copies for each character, and they only appear in Collector Boosters – never in regular Play Boosters.

How are they different from normal headliner cards?

Standard headliners are serialized from 1 to 500, with one copy per number. The Star Trek versions are textless foils that swap the printed serial number for a real hand-written signature, so each card is slightly unique.

Will we learn more about the 2027 sets soon?

MagicCon in Atlanta runs from November 13 to 15 alongside the World Championship, and that’s the most likely venue for Wizards of the Coast to share more of the 2027 plans.
