This guide lists all 43 enchantments in Minecraft Java 26.3 with their maximum level, the gear they go on and the ones they clash with. You will also learn how the Enchanting Table, the Anvil and the Librarian villager work, and which enchantments the table will never give you. Everything here applies to Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.52 (the Wilderness Bound drop, September 2026); where Bedrock differs, we say so.
Every enchantment and its max level
The table comes straight from the Java 26.3 game data. The “Incompatible with” column shows enchantments that cannot sit on the same item. “From the table” tells you whether the enchantment can roll on an Enchanting Table at all.

Sweeping Edge only exists in Java Edition, so you will not find it on a Bedrock sword. The two curses, Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing, never come from the table and a Grindstone will not remove them.
Which enchantments clash
An item can only carry one enchantment from each of these groups. In Java 26.3 they are:
- Protection – Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection, Projectile Protection.
- Boots – Frost Walker or Depth Strider.
- Bow – Infinity or Mending.
- Crossbow – Multishot or Piercing.
- Damage – Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Impaling, Density, Breach.
- Mining – Fortune or Silk Touch.
- Trident – Riptide does not work with Loyalty or Channeling.
Best combos for sword, pickaxe, bow and armour
This is not a tier list, just what fits together on one piece of gear. We leave out damage numbers because we could not verify them reliably.

- Sword – Mending, Unbreaking, Fire Aspect, Looting, Knockback, Sweeping Edge in Java, plus one of Sharpness, Smite or Bane of Arthropods.
- Pickaxe – Mending, Unbreaking, Efficiency and either Fortune or Silk Touch.
- Bow – Unbreaking, Power, Punch, Flame and either Infinity or Mending.
- Armour – Mending, Unbreaking, Thorns and one type of Protection. The helmet adds Respiration and Aqua Affinity, leggings take Swift Sneak, boots take Feather Falling, Soul Speed and either Depth Strider or Frost Walker.
How to use the Enchanting Table
You craft an Enchanting Table from a Book, 2 Diamonds and 4 Obsidian, and a Bookshelf from 6 planks and 3 Books. The full recipes are in our crafting recipes guide. The table enchants unenchanted tools, weapons, armour and books, and you pay with Lapis Lazuli and experience levels.
- Place the table and up to 15 Bookshelves around it, with a one-block gap of air between them. Even a torch in that gap breaks the connection.
- Put your item and Lapis Lazuli into the table.
- Pick one of three random offers. On top of the main enchantment, you may get a bonus one.
With 15 Bookshelves the top offer reaches level 30. You need at least 30 levels to choose it, but it only costs you 3 levels and 3 Lapis Lazuli, because the cost matches the offer slot (1 to 3). Even a level 30 offer does not guarantee more enchantments or their maximum level.
Treasure enchantments the table never gives
Treasure enchantments never appear on the table. In Java 26.3 they are Mending, Frost Walker, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Wind Burst, Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing. The table only draws from the regular pool, so you need to get these elsewhere, usually as Enchanted Books.
Mending is the one everyone wants. It repairs your gear with the experience orbs you pick up, restoring 2 durability for every experience point. It only has one level.
Anvil and Enchanted Books
An Anvil combines two of the same item, or an item with an Enchanted Book. Two identical enchantments of the same level merge into one level higher, which is how you reach maximum levels the table will not give you. It costs experience levels.
Watch the price. Every time an item goes through an Anvil, the next operation gets more expensive, roughly doubling. In survival, the Anvil refuses anything that would cost 40 levels or more and shows “Too Expensive!”. Plan the order in which you add books instead of stacking them one at a time.
To undo a bad roll, use a Grindstone. It strips every enchantment except curses and gives back some experience. It also turns an Enchanted Book back into a plain book.
The Librarian: enchanted books for emeralds
The most reliable route to treasure enchantments is a villager with the Librarian job. Librarians sell Enchanted Books with almost any enchantment, including Mending and Frost Walker. The exceptions are Soul Speed, Swift Sneak and Wind Burst, which they never sell. How to get a Librarian and push their prices down is covered in our villager trading guide.
If you just want to test enchantments, the /enchant command enchants the item in your hand when cheats are on, up to the same limits the Anvil allows. The syntax is in our commands list, and the Minecraft Wiki has the full mechanics.

FAQ
Sharpness goes up to V, like Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Efficiency, Power, Impaling and Density. The table will not always give you level V, so the sure way is to combine two level IV books on an Anvil.
Mending is a treasure enchantment and the table never offers it. Get it as an Enchanted Book, ideally from a Librarian, and apply it with an Anvil.
15 Bookshelves unlock the top level 30 offer. Leave a one-block air gap between the table and the shelves and keep it clear, even of torches.
In survival, the operation would cost 40 levels or more, so the Anvil refuses it. The cost grows each time an item goes through the Anvil, so add books with a plan.
Not in Java 26.3. The two enchantments are mutually exclusive on a bow, so pick one.
