In AION 2, Stigma are advanced skills that you pick yourself on top of your class’s basic abilities. You can equip six of them, and each one can be leveled up to 20, plus one of them to level 25. The material you need is Stigma Shards, which you mostly buy with Abyss Points. The Stigma system in AION 2 works differently from the original 2009 AION, though: there are no stones to socket into slots.
That last sentence matters more than it looks. Of the sixteen search results from the first pages that we went through for this topic, four describe the 2009 game, and one of them is a Stigma calculator that doesn’t work for AION 2 at all. This guide is about AION 2, not the original AION.
One more small thing in case the word throws you off: “stigma” here has nothing to do with a mark of disgrace. It’s the name of a game system, and that’s how we treat it throughout the article: Stigma skill, Stigma Shard, the Stigma system.
The key facts in six points
- Stigma are skills you choose, not items for slots. In the 2009 AION, Stigma Stones were collected from the world and socketed into slots. In AION 2 you pick them from a list and level them up.
- You can equip six Stigma skills. Until 25 March 2026 it was four.
- Stigma levels go up to 25. Until the Chapter 1 update on 1 July 2026, the cap was 20.
- The material is Stigma Shards, and there are three kinds. The main source of the basic one is the Abyss Exchange Shop, where you buy them with Abyss Points.
- If you want to max out your Stigma, you can’t avoid PvP. It’s the most unpleasant consequence of the whole system, and almost nobody says it out loud.
- Since Chapter 1, resetting Stigma is free. Experimenting with your build, meaning your specific skill setup, costs you nothing.
All numbers in this article come from the Korean and Taiwanese version, which has been running since 19 November 2025. The global version starts with early access on 30 September 2026 (for Founder’s Pack owners only) and the full free-to-play release on 5 October 2026. NCSOFT hasn’t said what state the Stigma system will be in at launch.
What Stigma are in AION 2 and why they matter
Stigma are advanced skills that you optionally add to your class’s basic kit. Your class works without them, but Stigma turn it into a specific character with a specific playstyle. Just like stigmas shape your build, merch shapes your fan look – grab it as AION 2 merch at the GamersTogether shop.

Abilities in AION 2 come in two layers. Mastery skills are the basic active and passive abilities your class gets automatically as you level. Stigma skills are advanced abilities that you choose yourself and that can be strengthened separately. The best one-sentence summary we found in international sources goes roughly like this: basic skills make you a functional class, Stigma make you a player.
In practice this means two things. Two Templars at the same level with the same gear can play completely differently: one built around holding the enemy, the other around surviving when outnumbered. And second, a bad Stigma choice shows up sooner than bad gear, because it affects every fight, not just the hard ones.
In total, a character has twelve ability slots, and Stigma take up six of them. The rest belong to Mastery skills and the basic attack.
How skills are actually used in combat, when they chain and why that matters more in one mode than another, is covered in our article on the AION 2 combat system. Which Stigma suit which class is handled in the individual class guides, and you’ll find links to all of them in the class overview and tier list.
Stigma in AION 2 vs Stigma in the original AION: what changed
Almost everything changed except the name. If you played the original AION, this section will save you the most time. If you didn’t, it will save you time too, because search engines serve up the old mechanics as answers to questions about the sequel.
| Element | Original AION (2009) | AION 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Core of the system | Stigma Stones were items that dropped in the world and were socketed into slots | Stigma are skills you choose and level up |
| Unlocking slots | Quests: two slots at level 45, one each at 50, 52 and 55 (Greater Stigma) | A fixed number of slots (six today) |
| Reset | Cost money | Free since Chapter 1 |
| Upgrade material | None; you either had the stone or you didn’t | Stigma Shards in three kinds |
Game databases put it briefly: the classic Stigma system is back, but it has been completely rebuilt, and socketing stones found in the world has been replaced by a different principle. That’s the core of this whole article.
A warning you won’t find elsewhere: among the top search results for “aion 2 stigma” are a wiki and a calculator for the original AION, plus a private server forum. The search engine even quotes them directly when answering follow-up questions: ask how Stigma are unlocked and it serves you an answer about slots at levels 45 to 55. That mechanic doesn’t exist in AION 2. If you open a Stigma calculator somewhere and the numbers don’t match what you see in the game, the mistake isn’t yours.
Everything else that changed between the two games beyond Stigma, from combat to the economy, is summed up in our comparison AION Classic vs AION 2.
How many Stigma you can equip and how that changed over the year
You can equip six Stigma skills. Until 25 March 2026 it was four. No other article about Stigma mentions this change, even though it’s the reason most older guides list the wrong number.
| Date | What changed |
|---|---|
| 19 Nov 2025: KR/TW launch | 4 Stigma slots, maximum Stigma level 20 |
| 21 Jan 2026: Season 2 | New Arcana slots added (a different system, see below) |
| 25 Mar 2026: class rework | Slots 4 → 6. Mastery and Stigma skills started sharing slots. Every class got a new Stigma skill. Unstable Stigma Shard added |
| 1 Jul 2026: Chapter 1 | Maximum Stigma level 20 → 25, Advanced Stigma Shards added, free reset |
The slot sharing from the March patch is the least clear item in the table. It means Mastery and Stigma skills draw from the same pool of slots: the basic attack on the left mouse button stays fixed, and the two layers split the rest. In practice, you choose the ratio between basic and advanced abilities. What exactly you give up when you equip a fifth Stigma, though, isn’t explained by any available source.
The same March patch gave every playable class one new Stigma skill. According to that patch, these are the names: Crushing Charge (Gladiator), Battlefield Banner (Templar), Shadowstep (Assassin), Supporting Fire (Ranger), Hibernation (Sorcerer), Command: Proxy (Spiritmaster), Touch of Rebirth (Cleric) and Barrier Spell (Chanter). This is a list of skills from one update, not a list of the classes in the game; for that, see the class overview.
Stigma themselves unlock at around level 23. Only one source gives this figure and it isn’t officially confirmed. Until you get there, you play with Mastery skills only. How to reach level 20 quickly is covered in our leveling guide.
Stigma levels and Stigma Shards: where to get the material
Every Stigma skill can be leveled up to 25, and the material is Stigma Shards. Until Chapter 1 the cap was 20. NCSOFT’s official press release from early July 2026 describes the increase directly: Stigma skills can now be enhanced up to level 25.
There are three kinds of shards, and they confuse even experienced players because their names are nearly identical.
| Shard type | What it’s for | Where to get it | Available since |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stigma Shard | Stigma levels up to 20 | Mainly the Abyss Exchange Shop for Abyss Points; the community also reports drops from Transcendence dungeons | Launch |
| Unstable Stigma Shard | Not specified in the translated patch notes | Awakening Battle and key rewards from Hidden Cubes | 25 Mar 2026 |
| Advanced Stigma Shard | Stigma levels 20 to 25 | 1 per character level-up from level 45, plus 1 extra for bringing any Stigma skill to level 20 | 1 Jul 2026 |
Without the Abyss, you can’t max out your Stigma
The main source of basic Stigma Shards is the Abyss Exchange Shop, where you buy them with Abyss Points. Abyss Points are earned in the Abyss, the game’s main PvP zone. This is the tightest dependency in all of AION 2, and nobody says it out loud: if you want your Stigma maxed out, you have to play PvP.
The community puts it even more bluntly. The thread most often quoted about Stigma Shards is literally titled “getting Stigma to level 20 is impossible without the Abyss”. That’s no exaggeration, and it’s only fair to say so before you pour dozens of hours into the system.
The practical consequence if you don’t want PvP: you can equip Stigma skills and raise them to low levels without the Abyss, but the top tier of the system stays locked. How the Abyss works, how you earn Abyss Points there and what the weekly caps are is covered in our article on the Abyss, AION 2’s main PvP zone.
Group activities are an additional source of shards: Transcendence dungeons (a community report), Awakening Battle and keys from Hidden Cubes. An overview of what you can run and where is in our dungeon overview.
The good news: resetting Stigma is free
Since Chapter 1, a Stigma reset costs nothing. It used to cost materials, and in the original AION it was so expensive that players were afraid to experiment at all.
It’s the best news in the whole article, and it changes how you should approach the system. You don’t have to find “the right build” in advance: equip whatever appeals to you, play a few evenings and rearrange. Just note that, according to the available sources, resetting the skills from the so-called Ancestry quest at level 25 isn’t free and costs Kinah, the in-game currency whose economy we break down in our article on Kinah and the in-game economy.
One more practical note about skills: your basic attack on the left mouse button restores mana, while skills consume it. Sources disagree on whether the game has classic mana potions. Two international sites say there are none, while a Korean guide says they can be made through crafting. Nobody has settled the question yet.
Stigma isn’t the only way to strengthen your skills
Stigma sit alongside other systems that get mixed up with them because, on the surface, they do the same thing: raise skill levels. Untangling them is half the value of this article.
The basic rule is simple: points earned by leveling your character take a skill up to level 10. Beyond that, points aren’t enough and other layers take over.
| System | What it is | How you strengthen it | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mastery | The class’s basic active and passive abilities | Points from leveling, specialization | Individual class guides |
| Stigma | Advanced skills you choose yourself | Stigma Shards, levels 1–25 | This article |
| Ancestry | A quest at level 25 that unlocks four more skills to choose from | Choice during the quest, reset for Kinah | This article |
| Daevanion | A board system of nodes unlocked with Daevanion crystals | Crystals, node reset for Kinah | This article |
| Arcana | Cards and scrolls from dungeon cubes, placed into slots | Refining and upgrading, same as gear | Gear enhancement |
Above level 10, three things raise your skills: gear (random so-called soul imprints), Arcana and Daevanion. The Chapter 1 update added the Key, Hourglass, Dice and Lantern Arcana types. Daevanion has six boards named after lore characters, each with a different focus, from combat speed and critical damage to separate bonuses for PvE and for PvP.
None of these are Stigma. Obtaining, refining and upgrading Arcana, as well as soul imprints on gear, belong to the item side of the game, which we cover in our article on enchanting and gear enhancement. Here we stick to what makes a skill stronger, not an item.
Stigma builds for PvE and PvP: what to keep in mind
Specific “take these skills” recommendations belong in the individual class guides. The general rules apply across all classes, though, and they’re worth knowing before you spend your first shards.
For PvE, pick Stigma with area damage and steady, predictable output. Dungeons involve a lot of fights against groups of enemies, and a one-off burst of damage helps you less there than an ability you can use every few seconds.
For PvP, pick control, mobility and resistances instead. One thing plays a bigger role here than you’d expect: since 25 March 2026, healing in the Abyss, on battlegrounds and in arenas has been cut in half. A build that relies on healing yourself mid-fight is therefore noticeably weaker than before.
You can see how differently the choice can turn out on two classes with opposite jobs. A Templar builds Stigma around holding enemy attention and surviving on the front line, so it reaches for control and defensive abilities. A Cleric deals with the opposite: who gets healed and how fast. After the PvP healing cut mentioned above, it has to sacrifice some slots just to get a chance to act at all. Same system, two completely different builds.
And one thing nobody mentions: on balanced battlegrounds, Stigma levels don’t matter. The Sandstorm Temple battleground equalizes every player’s stats and forces Mastery skills to level 20 and Stigma skills to level 25. What decides things there is your choice of Stigma, not how much material you’ve poured into them, and it’s the cheapest way to test a build before you invest in it.
Since the reset is free, the advice is simple: experiment. The system is designed so that a mistake costs you nothing.
What Chapter 1 did to Stigma (KR/TW)
The update is officially called Chapter 1. Lands of Sand and Snow; in community posts you’ll also see it as “Land of Sand and Frost”. It came out on 1 July 2026 on the Korean and Taiwanese servers and hasn’t been confirmed for the global version.
It brought three changes to Stigma. It raised the maximum Stigma level from 20 to 25, added Advanced Stigma Shards as a new material and removed the reset cost. On top of that, it raised the character level cap to 50, which matters for shards too, because you get an Advanced Stigma Shard for every level-up from level 45.
Two older patches belong to the same line. The one from 25 March 2026 increased the number of slots to six, introduced slot sharing with Mastery and gave every class a new Stigma skill. Season 2 on 21 January 2026 added new Arcana slots.
You’ll find a full summary of the update in our Chapter 1 patch notes overview.
Will Stigma be the same in the global version?
We don’t know, and neither does anyone else. NCSOFT hasn’t published anywhere what content the global servers will launch with. Even the developer account’s pre-launch FAQ on Steam doesn’t cover the Stigma system.
Only the dates are certain. Early access starts on 30 September 2026 and is available only to Founder’s Pack owners; the full free-to-play launch for everyone is on 5 October 2026. We cover both dates in detail in our article on the AION 2 release date.
One worry can be put to rest right away: Founder’s Packs don’t give you a head start on Stigma. All three tiers include the same five days of extra access and differ only in cosmetics. What exactly they contain is covered in our article on early access and Founder’s Packs. Stigma Shards can’t be bought with real money; you earn them by playing. For paid purchases in general, see our piece on price, the F2P model and the cash shop.

FAQ
They unlock on their own as your character progresses, at around level 23. You don’t have to complete any quest for them, and the number of slots is fixed. Watch out for the answers search engines give you: slots unlocked through quests at levels 45, 50, 52 and 55 belong to the original 2009 AION. That mechanic doesn’t exist in AION 2.
Six. Until 25 March 2026 it was four, so older guides list a lower number. With the same patch, Mastery and Stigma skills started sharing slots, which means you choose the ratio between basic and advanced abilities. The figure comes from the Korean and Taiwanese version; NCSOFT hasn’t confirmed it for the global launch.
The main source is the Abyss Exchange Shop, where you buy them with Abyss Points. The community also reports drops from Transcendence dungeons, and the patch notes mention Awakening Battle and keys from Hidden Cubes. Advanced Stigma Shards for levels 20 to 25 can’t be bought at all: you get them for character level-ups from level 45.
Practically, yes. Basic Stigma Shards are bought mainly with Abyss Points, and those are earned in the Abyss, which means PvP. Without it, you can equip Stigma and raise them to low levels, but the top tier of the system stays locked. The community says the same: without the Abyss, you can’t reasonably reach the highest levels.
Yes, and since the Chapter 1 update the reset is free; it used to cost materials. So you can experiment as often as you like without losing anything. The exception is the skills from the Ancestry quest at level 25, which, according to the available sources, cost Kinah to reset.
Stigma are advanced skills that you choose and level up with Stigma Shards. Daevanion is a board system of nodes unlocked with crystals, and it raises skill levels above the normal cap. Arcana are cards and scrolls for slots that do the same, but you obtain and upgrade them like items. All three strengthen skills, each in a different way.
No. In the 2009 AION, Stigma Stones were items that dropped in the world and were socketed into slots unlocked through quests, and resets cost money. In AION 2, Stigma are skills you pick from a list and level up with shards, the slots are fixed and the reset is free. Wikis and calculators for the original game don’t apply to AION 2.
The Stigma system changed twice during 2026 and may change again with the global launch, so we’ll go through this article again after 30 September and after 5 October 2026 and verify the numbers directly in the game. You’ll find all our other guides in the AION 2 game guides section. Information verified as of 15 August 2026.
