The best PS5 games here are sorted by genre and by the kind of evening they suit, not by review averages. The picks are ours, but everything else – platforms, player counts and languages – comes straight from Sony’s product pages. You won’t find how many hours each game takes: Sony doesn’t list it, and it varies from player to player anyway.

Big story games for when you want one world for several weeks
Ghost of Yōtei is the best first game for someone who just unboxed a PS5, because it never rushes you – you can spend half an hour just riding through the landscape without ticking anything off.
God of War Ragnarök strikes the best balance between combat and storytelling of any game on the list – neither camp gets bored. Sony lists it for both console generations. What the PS5 Pro Enhanced label means in practice is covered in our PS5 vs PS5 Pro comparison.
Pick Horizon Forbidden West if what you enjoy most in open worlds is the combat – the robots behave unlike anything the competition offers.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the easiest of the group to get into, because swinging around the city clicks even for someone who hasn’t held a controller in ten years. Sony only lists English, French, Brazilian Portuguese and Mexican Spanish for it, so English is covered but German isn’t.
RPGs where language support is the difference between playing and translating
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is the only big game in this overview that Sony lists with Czech in both the Voice field (voice acting) and the Screen Languages field (subtitles and text). In a game where half the content happens in dialogue, playing in a language you fully understand changes the experience more than resolution does. Demon’s Souls is the opposite end: a tough game for which Sony doesn’t even list the player count field. Treat it as a test of whether soulslikes are for you, not as something to unwind with.
Action in shorter sessions

Returnal is for players who hate being led by the hand. Every run starts from zero, and co-op is online only. Toxic Commando is just as unforgiving about permadeath, though there you can get around it with a stimulant trick.
Stellar Blade lives and dies by its combat, which you keep learning until it becomes second nature.
When you don’t want to play alone
Helldivers 2 is the only game on the list worth launching mainly for the people on the other side. Sony lists support for up to four online players with PS Plus, and the paid membership is required for online play – what each tier includes is broken down in our overview of PS Plus Essential, Extra and Premium.
Split Fiction and LEGO Horizon Adventures, on the other hand, are games for sharing one couch. For Split Fiction, Sony lists one to two players and mentions split screen in the game description; for LEGO Horizon Adventures it also lists one to two players, with couch co-op and online co-op, but only between players on the same platform. Racing that makes people buy a wheel
Gran Turismo 7 is the only game here where the hardware around the console matters more than the game itself. Sony lists it on both PS4 and PS5, with support for up to twenty online players with PS Plus. It also supports PlayStation VR2, so you can drive from the cockpit, and there are wheels Sony lists as compatible.
How to check each game yourself before you buy
Every game’s product page in the PS Store has an information block with four fields that settle the decision more often than reviews do. A fifth source is the trophy list, because it shows right away what the game asks of you, and how trophies on PlayStation work is something we cover separately:
- Players – how many players the game supports on one console.
- Online players – how many players online, and whether PS Plus is required for it.
- Voice – the voice-over languages.
- Screen Languages – the subtitle and text languages.
There’s no field for split screen among them. Whether two players on one console split the picture or share one view is something developers only mention in free text in the game description. And watch out: the languages apply to the version of the game in that particular store, so check them on the specific listing, not for the game in general.
The PS Plus catalog also keeps shifting: Sony reserves the right in its terms to change the number and availability of games at any time. Monthly PS Plus games work differently – once you claim them, they stay in your library for as long as your membership lasts.
Who this list won’t help
If you play one game over and over, don’t buy anything from this overview. Ten hours in Gran Turismo 7 or Helldivers 2 will give you more than ten half-finished story games. And if you assume a big game automatically supports every language, you’re in for a disappointment – half the exclusives in the table don’t list Czech, for example.

If it has to be one name, Astro Bot – anyone can get into it, and it shows off the console exactly the way it was designed. If you want a big story for several weeks, go for God of War Ragnarök or Ghost of Yōtei instead.
Check the Voice and Screen Languages fields on the game’s PS Store page, and do it for the specific version in your store. Language support varies a lot even in this selection: Sony lists Czech subtitles for God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Yōtei, Astro Bot and Gran Turismo 7, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II also has Czech voice acting, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 lists only English, French, Brazilian Portuguese and Mexican Spanish.
Sony marks games tuned for the more powerful model with the PS5 Pro Enhanced label and talks about more than a hundred such titles. Most games on this list have it. Sony doesn’t describe under what conditions the difference is visible, though, so the label only tells you that the game received the upgrade.
Not for single-player games. Sony ties the paid membership to online multiplayer, so you need it for Helldivers 2 or for online races in Gran Turismo 7. According to Sony, most free-to-play games like Fortnite or Apex Legends don’t require a membership.
Some do. Sony lists PS4 as a supported platform for God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7, but only PS5 for Ghost of Yōtei, Astro Bot or Demon’s Souls. Each game has its platforms listed in the store.
