How to cancel Game Pass on Xbox or the web, when you get a refund and how to switch plans

You can cancel Game Pass at any time, either on your Xbox console or on the web through your Microsoft account. Cancelling means turning off recurring billing: no further payments are taken, and your games and other benefits keep working until the end of the period you’ve paid for. You only get money back in clearly defined cases, mainly within 30 days of your first purchase. Below are the steps, the refund rules and what to do if you were charged after cancelling. Correct as of 20 October 2026, based on Microsoft’s support pages.

What cancelling Game Pass actually does

Microsoft separates two things. A normal cancellation turns off recurring billing, so the subscription runs until its expiry date and then ends. In some cases you’ll also be offered an immediate cancellation with a refund, but that only applies to some charges, not all of them. The console or website shows you which option you’re eligible for during the cancellation.

How to cancel Game Pass on console

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
  2. Go to Profile & system > Settings > Account > Subscriptions.
  3. Choose the subscription you want to manage and select Cancel subscription.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps. If you’re eligible for a refund, the console will offer it.

How to cancel Game Pass on the web

This works from a phone or a computer. What matters is signing in with the same Microsoft account you used to pay for the subscription.

  1. Open the Microsoft account subscriptions page and sign in.
  2. Find Game Pass and select Manage.
  3. Select Cancel subscription and follow the instructions.
  4. If you’re eligible for a refund, you’ll see an option to cancel immediately with a refund.

If you see Turn on recurring billing instead of Manage, the subscription is already set to expire on the date shown. You won’t be charged after that date, and you can keep using Game Pass until then. Microsoft’s own walkthrough is on the Xbox support page.

When you get a refund

According to Microsoft, these are the refund rules for Xbox subscriptions:

  • New purchase: you get a refund if you cancel within 30 days of your initial purchase or before your first recurring billing date, whichever comes first.
  • Most recent renewal: if your subscription renewed and you cancel within 30 days of that payment, you can get that last charge back. This works once per Microsoft account, per subscription product.
  • Prepaid retail codes: these rules don’t apply. The return policy of the retailer you bought the code from does.
  • Anything else: refund requests outside these cancellation processes aren’t eligible, according to Microsoft.

Some countries also have a right to cancel with immediate effect and a prorated refund. In Finland, Germany (purchases from 1 March 2022), the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal it covers the last renewal charge for subscription terms longer than one month. In Canada, Denmark, France, Israel, Korea and Türkiye it covers the last subscription charge. In Germany you can also cancel without signing in to your Microsoft account. If your country isn’t on the list, the general rules above apply.

Refunds for games you bought are a separate matter with their own rules, covered in our guide to Xbox game refunds.

Why you were charged after cancelling

Microsoft lists these as the most common reasons:

  • You cancelled close to the billing date and the cancellation didn’t process in time. Check the subscription status in your Microsoft account.
  • You cancelled the future renewal, not the current term. The charge is for time you’d already agreed to before cancelling.
  • It was a past-due balance. If an earlier payment failed, the system may retry it even after you cancel.

If your statement shows an Xbox subscription charge but your account has nothing set to renew, your card may also be linked to another Microsoft account, for example someone in your Xbox family group. Check the subscriptions on every account that uses the card. If you still can’t match the charge, Microsoft offers an Investigate a charge tool for Microsoft Store payments from the last 60 days.

Paying for someone else’s subscription? The owner of the account with the subscription has to cancel it. If a third party bills you for Game Pass, contact them about cancellations and refunds. And if the subscription price ever changes, Microsoft tells you at least 30 days in advance, so you can cancel before the new price applies.

What happens to your games after cancelling

When the subscription ends, you lose access to catalogue games unless you buy them. Add-ons and DLC you bought stay yours, and your progress is saved in the cloud, so if you buy the game later or come back to Game Pass, you carry on where you left off. Whether the subscription is worth keeping at all is covered in our Game Pass value breakdown.

On your home Xbox, you share Game Pass with every profile that signs in to that console, so the end of your subscription affects them too. How sharing works is explained in our home Xbox guide.

Downgrade instead of cancelling

If Game Pass feels too expensive, you don’t have to drop it entirely. Ultimate and Premium can be downgraded to a lower tier. A downgrade costs nothing up front and takes effect at your next renewal; until then you keep your current tier. An upgrade (from Essential, Premium, PC Game Pass or EA Play to a higher tier) is charged immediately and your remaining prepaid time is converted. Up to 13 months can be carried over to Premium and up to 36 months to Ultimate, and the conversion is final and non-refundable. Changing the plan length, for example from monthly to a longer term, applies from your next renewal.

  • On console: Profile & system > Settings > Account > Subscriptions, choose the subscription and select Change subscription.
  • On the web: select Manage next to the subscription. To go up, use the upgrade option. To go down, choose Turn off recurring billing and then Switch now on the lower tier. To change the plan length, use Switch plan.
  • In the Xbox app on PC, mobile or handheld: Settings > Account > My Subscriptions.

Watch out with the older Game Pass for Console. New subscribers can no longer buy it, and if you cancel it, you can’t subscribe to it again.

Prices differ by country, so check the current price for yours on xbox.com. What each tier includes is compared in our overview of Game Pass tiers.
