The Jeweler in Diablo 4 crafts gems from fragments, removes them from your gear and, through runes, helps you get Mythic Unique items. This guide covers all seven gem types including Topaz, what each one does in a weapon, armor and jewelry, how upgrading works all the way to Grand quality and which Jeweler services are worth your materials. It reflects the game after the Lord of Hatred expansion, in Season 15 and after patch 3.2.3 from 14 October 2026.
The seven gem types and what they do
There are seven gems: Amethyst, Diamond, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, Topaz and Skull. Topaz is missing from many older tables, but it is a full gem in the current game and covers Lightning damage and Intelligence. What a gem does depends on the slot. In a weapon it boosts the damage of one element, in armor it adds an attribute and in jewelry it adds resistance.

We left the exact numbers out on purpose. Every gem quality gives a different value and the in-game tooltip shows you the precise figure. Older guides that list Ruby for Overpower or Emerald for Critical Strike Damage describe the system from before Lord of Hatred and no longer apply.
Choosing a gem for your weapon and armor
Your weapon gem follows the element your character mainly deals. A Sorcerer works with Cold, Lightning and Fire, so Sapphire, Topaz or Ruby. A Barbarian’s skills are Physical by default, which matches Skull. Diamond with its All Damage bonus works for any element, which makes it handy when a build mixes several damage types.
In armor, use the gem for your class’s main attribute:
- Strength (Ruby): Barbarian and Paladin.
- Intelligence (Topaz): Sorcerer and Necromancer.
- Dexterity (Emerald): Rogue and Spiritborn.
- Willpower (Sapphire): Druid.
We could not confirm the Warlock’s main attribute from two independent sources, so it is not listed here. Diamond in armor adds all attributes at once, Amethyst adds barrier and Skull adds healing. For jewelry, socket gems based on which elemental resistance you are missing.
Gem qualities: up to Grand
Every gem comes in several qualities, rising through Chipped and Flawless up to Royal and, at the very top, Grand.
The top quality today is Grand, not Royal as older guides say. Crafting Royal and Grand gems also requires Forgotten Souls on top of fragments. The higher the quality, the stronger the effect in any slot.

Crafting gems from Gem Fragments
Gems are crafted from Gem Fragments. You can convert fragments of one type into another, so you do not end up with hundreds of fragments for a gem you will never socket. If you change builds often, this is the most useful thing the vendor does.
Removing gems without destroying them
You can take a gem out of your gear without destroying it. When you find a better item, move the gem over and lose nothing. There is no reason to save good gems for your “final” gear, so socket them right away.
Rune Crafting and Mythic Crafting
The Jeweler handles Rune Crafting and Mythic Crafting. Runes plus a Resplendent Spark turn into a Mythic Unique for a specific gear slot, so you do not have to wait for a random drop. It is one of three crafting routes to Mythic Uniques the game offers since Season 15.
Jewelers Cache from surplus fragments
Once your gems are at a level you are happy with, spend surplus fragments on a Jewelers Cache. It contains two Legendary amulets and three Legendary rings. Treat it as a way to use leftovers, not as your main source of jewelry.
Sockets and the Scattered Prism
You can only socket a gem into an item that has a socket. Sockets are added with a Scattered Prism, which drops from World Bosses and Treasure Goblins. You will not get one from every fight, so put it into pieces you plan to keep for a while, not into gear you will swap an hour later.
Three routes to Mythic Uniques since Season 15
Mythic Uniques no longer come only from drops. Since Season 15 there are three crafting routes:
- Jeweler: Rune Crafting and Mythic Crafting from runes and a Resplendent Spark.
- Blacksmith: Mythic Cache.
- Horadric Cube: Upgrade Direct Item to Mythic turns an item into a Mythic 1:1 and keeps its affixes. The result is tagged “Crafted” and you can only wear one.

A sensible order of upgrades
- Add sockets with a Scattered Prism to the weapon, armor and jewelry you plan to keep.
- Put a gem matching your damage element in your weapon, or Diamond for a mixed build.
- Socket your class’s main attribute gem in armor.
- Use jewelry to patch the resistances you are missing.
- Upgrade gems step by step to Grand and convert spare fragments or turn them into a Jewelers Cache.
