Dune: Awakening hotfix: BattlEye becomes optional and the ornithopter stops spawning mid-air

A fresh hotfix has landed in Dune: Awakening on Steam, and this one is small in size but notable in effect: you can now start the game without the BattlEye anti-cheat in specific cases. The update requires a client-side download, so if it doesn’t show up on its own, restart your Steam client. Servers are coming back up shortly after the rollout.

Funcom points players toward the official Discord server or the Steam discussion boards for the current list of known issues.

Features and changes

  • You can now launch the game on Steam without the BattlEye anti-cheat software installed or enabled – this applies to single-player mode and to private and self-hosted servers that don’t require it.
  • BattlEye is still required for multiplayer servers that have BattlEye enabled in the Steam version. If you try to join such a server from a client without BattlEye, you’ll get an error.

In other words, if you play solo or on your own server, the anti-cheat no longer has to run alongside the game. If you jump onto public multiplayer, nothing changes for you. This change was first trialed on the test client, which we covered in our article on patch 1.5.15.0, and the topic has its own history – we also wrote about an earlier BattlEye rollback.

Fixes

  • Improved server and client stability.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause autosave recovery to fail.
  • Fixed an issue in single-player where the ornithopter would spawn in the air instead of on the ground after you travelled to Hagga Basin or the Deep Desert from the Overland Map.

The autosave fix is the one that matters most for solo players – a failed recovery can cost you real progress. The ornithopter spawn bug was mostly a nuisance, but an aircraft materializing above the dunes instead of on the sand is exactly the kind of thing that ends badly.

FAQ

Do I have to download anything for this hotfix?

Yes. The hotfix requires a client-side download. If it doesn’t start automatically, restart your Steam client.

Can I now play Dune: Awakening completely without BattlEye?

Only in single-player mode and on private or self-hosted servers that don’t require it. Multiplayer servers with BattlEye enabled in the Steam version still need the anti-cheat.

What happens if I join a multiplayer server without BattlEye?

You’ll get an error and won’t be able to connect. For BattlEye-enabled servers, the anti-cheat remains mandatory.

What was wrong with the ornithopter?

In single-player, the ornithopter could spawn in the air instead of on the ground after you travelled to Hagga Basin or the Deep Desert from the Overland Map. That has been fixed.

Where can I find the list of known issues?

On the official Dune: Awakening Discord server or in the Steam discussion boards, both of which are linked directly in the patch notes.
