GeForce NOW vs Xbox Cloud Gaming

GeForce NOW vs Xbox Cloud Gaming

The GeForce NOW vs Xbox Cloud comparison comes down to one sentence: Xbox Cloud Gaming gives you games for a monthly fee, while GeForce NOW gives you the hardware power for games you already own. Both stream from a remote server, but you pay for something different, and you are left with something different when you cancel.

If you do not think this through in advance, you end up paying either for an empty computer or for a catalog full of games you do not care about. So the choice does not depend on price but on where you have bought your games.

One item in the table causes the most confusion. Xbox Cloud Gaming is not a standalone subscription: it is part of Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate. PC Game Pass at CZK 319 a month does not include cloud, even though it costs more than Essential. If you buy it for streaming, you bought the wrong thing. What exactly each tier includes is covered in the overview of Game Pass tiers.

Example calculation: a player who plays whatever is available

Take a player who does not much care what they are playing and just wants something to launch at all times. They do not have a big Steam library and do not buy new releases.

For them, the right fit is Game Pass Ultimate at CZK 499 a month, which comes to CZK 5,988 a year. They get over 400 games, new releases on launch day and online multiplayer on console. They can play 15 hours a month from the cloud; the rest has to be downloaded to a console or PC. The cheaper Premium at CZK 329 gives over 200 games and 10 hours of cloud, but new releases only within a year of launch.

If this player bought GeForce NOW, they would get an empty screen. The service would only offer them free games, because they have nothing to launch. They would pay CZK 299 or 599 a month for power they have nothing to use on.

Example calculation: a player with a Steam library

The second player already owns plenty. Eighty games on Steam, a few on Epic, and a computer that can no longer keep up with newer titles.

For them, GeForce NOW Performance costs CZK 2,999 a year, or CZK 250 a month, and they get 100 hours a month at up to 1440p. For nothing extra, they launch what they have already paid for once. Game Pass at CZK 499 a month would offer them a catalog alongside their library, not instead of it: their eighty games do not carry over to Game Pass.

The difference is easiest to see over three years. A yearly GeForce NOW Ultimate membership costs CZK 5,999, so CZK 17,997 over three years, which is practically the same as CZK 17,964 for three years of Game Pass Ultimate. For an almost identical amount, though, one player gets the most powerful rigs and 100 hours a month on their own games, and the other gets a library of 400 games and 15 hours of streaming. Whether this math pays off against buying hardware is worked out in the article cloud gaming or your own PC.

Hours: both services have started counting

Until recently, cloud gaming was sold as unlimited. That has ended for both.

On 15 January 2026, NVIDIA introduced a cap of 100 hours a month for both Performance and Ultimate, with up to 15 unused hours rolling over. Once you use them up, you can buy more time in the account portal, or keep playing on basic rigs.

Microsoft announced its caps on 3 September 2026, taking effect in November 2026: 5 hours on Essential, 10 on Premium and 15 on Ultimate. Until then, it describes the current state as unlimited streaming. By its own estimate, the change will affect about 4% of subscribers, and it cited the rising costs of running the cloud. Once your hours run out, you will be able to buy more time in the Xbox Store, but it has not published the price yet.

The gap in the numbers is huge: 100 hours versus 15. Xbox Cloud Gaming is not built for you to play through it all the time, but for launching a game on your TV or phone when you do not have your console with you. How to get it running the first time is shown in the guide getting started with Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Where you can play

Xbox streams to Series X and S consoles and the older Xbox One, to Windows, handhelds, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Samsung and LG TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Meta headsets and to the browser at xbox.com/play. Fortnite streams through the browser for free even without a subscription; a Microsoft account is enough.

GeForce NOW has a native app for Windows, macOS, Ubuntu, Android, iOS, Fire TV, SHIELD TV, LG and Samsung TVs from 2020 to 2025, and for handhelds including Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Legion Go and MSI Claw. On a TV or in a headset, the same applies to both services, though: you cannot play without a gamepad.

There is one more difference that does not show up in feature tables: where the data centers are. NVIDIA, for example, has no server in Czechia or Slovakia, so players there connect to the nearest data centers in Poland and Germany. What that does to latency shows mainly in competitive games.

Which one to choose

Game Pass and its cloud make sense when you do not have a big library, want to play new releases on launch day, play on console and only use streaming now and then away from home. Whether it pays off in your case is worked out in the analysis is Game Pass worth it.

GeForce NOW makes sense when you already own games on PC, want higher resolution and frame rates than 1440p, or play longer sessions and fifteen hours a month is not enough.

Buy neither if you mostly play competitively where tenths of a second count, if your connection is unstable, or if you play several hours every day. In that last case you will hit the cap on both services and start paying extra. The basic mechanics of game streaming are explained in the introduction to how cloud gaming works.
