Hogwarts Legacy talents: how talent points and trees work

Talents are how you shape your character in Hogwarts Legacy: they boost spells, stealth, the Dark Arts and the Room of Requirement. This guide explains when you get your first talent point, the five talent trees, what the level 5, 16 and 22 tiers mean, what Spell Knowledge does and how to reset your talents. Valid on every platform as of 20 October 2026.

What talents are and when they unlock

You earn one talent point for every character level, starting at level 5. Each point unlocks one talent, an upgrade in one of the five trees.

The catch is that talents aren’t available from the very beginning. They unlock during the main story. You won’t lose any points, though: once talents open up, you get the points for every level you already have above level 5 all at once, retroactively. If you want to know what else unlocks gradually in your first hours, read our beginner’s guide.

The five talent trees

Talents are split across five trees:

  • Spells: spellcasting.
  • Dark Arts: dark magic.
  • Core: core abilities.
  • Stealth: sneaking.
  • Room of Requirement: your personal room.

Levels 5, 16 and 22

Talents are divided into three tiers based on your character level. The first tier is available from level 5, the second from level 16 and the third from level 22. You can’t grab the stronger talents early, even with spare points. Every talent costs exactly one point; there are no more expensive talents.

You can’t have everything

There are more talents in the game than points you’ll earn over a full playthrough. You can’t unlock everything, so you have to choose. In practice that means deciding whether you want stronger combat spells, stealth, the Dark Arts or a more convenient Room of Requirement. There is no single right path; it depends on how you play, and since 2024 you can change your mind at any time (more on resets below).

Spell Knowledge: more spells at hand

You assign spells to a set of four slots. The Spell Knowledge talents add extra spell sets that you switch between in combat and while exploring. Spell Knowledge I is available from level 5. You’ll learn far more spells than fit into a single set, so extra sets give you more options without constantly reshuffling. For a list of spells and where to learn them, see our spells guide.

Example talents by level

The table lists talents where independent outlets agree on both the level and the effect. It isn’t a ranking or a recommended order, just a taste of what talents do.

TalentFrom levelWhat it does
Incendio Mastery5Incendio creates a ring of fire around you
Levioso Mastery5Levioso also lifts enemies near the target
Spell Knowledge I5an extra spell set
Human Demiguise5sprint while under Disillusionment
Knockback Curse5Flipendo curses the target; cursed enemies take more damage
Blood Curse5damage to a cursed target hits all cursed enemies
Fertiliser5every Chinese Chomping Cabbage you throw comes with a free second one
Revelio Mastery16larger Revelio radius
Basic Cast Airborne Absorption16Basic Cast against airborne enemies fills Ancient Magic faster
Maxima Potion Potency16stronger Maxima Potion
Curse Sapper22defeating a cursed enemy restores a little health

As you can see, level 5 talents cover everything from combat to gardening. Higher-tier talents then extend what you can already do, such as Revelio’s range or the strength of the Maxima Potion.

Talent resets: possible since June 2024

Older guides from 2023 tell you talents can’t be reset and you should plan them carefully. That’s no longer true. The 5 June 2024 Summer Update added talent point resets, so you can rebuild your character without starting a new game. If your chosen direction doesn’t suit you, take the points back and spend them again.

Thanks to resets there’s no reason not to experiment. Try stealth, then the Dark Arts, and keep whatever you enjoy most.

How to level up faster

Experience, and with it levels, comes from three things: quests, challenges and exploring the world. The more of those you do, the faster you grow, so don’t skip side quests and challenges along the way. More levels mean more talent points and earlier access to the level 16 and 22 tiers.
