Hogwarts Legacy houses and wands: what they change and what doesn’t matter

Your house and wand are the first two big decisions in Hogwarts Legacy, and both look more important than they really are. This guide explains how the Sorting Hat works, what your house actually changes, which house quest takes you to Azkaban, how to import your house and wand from the Harry Potter Fan Club and why your wand is purely cosmetic. Valid on every platform as of 20 October 2026.

When and how you choose a house

You pick your house right at the start of the game. The Sorting Hat asks you a question with four answers, each tied to one house:

AnswerSuggested house
DaringGryffindor
CuriosityRavenclaw
LoyaltyHufflepuff
AmbitionSlytherin

The hat only suggests a house. You can accept the suggestion or pick a different house, so your answer doesn’t lock you into anything. The same applies to a house imported from the Harry Potter Fan Club (more below).

What your house changes

Less than you might expect. The main story is the same for every house. The differences are:

  • Common room. Every house has its own, and you can’t get into the others.
  • Exclusive quest. Each house has one quest the other houses don’t get.
  • School robes. Your house changes the colours of your robes.
  • First conversations. Different characters talk to you in the common room early on. You’ll meet everyone else over the course of the game anyway.

Friends and companions aren’t tied to your house. The students who become your companions are available wherever the hat puts you. The game also has no morality system, although quests and choices still shape what kind of witch or wizard you become.

The exclusive quest: Hufflepuff and Azkaban

The Hufflepuff quest is the one people talk about most. The Hufflepuff quest Prisoner of Love is the only quest in the game that takes you, briefly, to Azkaban. Players in other houses never go there. If Azkaban appeals to you, that’s the only concrete reason to pick a house for its content rather than personal preference.

The other three houses each have their own quest too, but the main story stays the same for everyone.

Importing your house and wand from the Harry Potter Fan Club

If you have a Harry Potter Fan Club account and went through the official Sorting and Wand Ceremony there, you can bring the result into the game. Just link your WB Games account to the Harry Potter Fan Club. Your house and wand carry over, and you also unlock the Beaked Skull Mask and the House Fan-Atic Robes. The process is described in the official game FAQ.

Even an imported house is just a suggestion. The Sorting Hat offers it, and you can accept it or choose another one.

Your wand: looks only

You design your wand at Ollivanders on your first visit to Hogsmeade. You choose the wood, the core (dragon heartstring, unicorn hair or phoenix feather), the length and the flexibility. All of it is purely cosmetic. None of these choices affects spell power or damage.

So don’t bother with tables of the best combinations. Pick a wand you like. Which spells you learn depends on quests and assignments, not your wand. For a list of spells and where to learn them, see our spells guide.

During the game you’ll also find wand handles. They come from chests and quest rewards and, like the rest of the wand, only change its appearance.

You can change your look later

If you stop liking your character after a few hours, you don’t have to start over. Hair, eyebrows, scars and similar details can be changed at Madam Snelling’s Tress Emporium in Hogsmeade.

Want a different house? Start a new game

If you want to see a different common room or another house quest, start a new game with a new character. The game supports multiple save slots, so you won’t lose your original playthrough. What else is worth knowing at the start is covered in our beginner’s guide.

FAQ

Does your house affect the story in Hogwarts Legacy?

The main story is the same for every house. Your house changes your common room, robe colours, early conversations and one exclusive quest.

Which house has the Azkaban quest?

Hufflepuff. Its house quest Prisoner of Love is the only quest in the game that briefly takes you to Azkaban.

Do I have to accept the house the Sorting Hat suggests?

No. The hat only suggests a house and you can choose another one. That also applies to a house imported from the Harry Potter Fan Club.

Do wand wood and core matter?

No. Wood, core, length, flexibility and handle are purely cosmetic and have no effect on spell power.

How do I try a different house?

Start a new game with a new character. The game supports multiple saves, so you keep your original playthrough.
