Steam Deck not turning on or frozen: official fixes and SteamOS recovery

If your Steam Deck won’t turn on, has frozen or has no sound, a forced restart, a charge or a few steps in the BIOS usually sort it out. Only when none of that helps is it time to recover SteamOS, starting with a rollback to the previous system version that keeps your games and saves, and ending with a clean install from USB. Every step here follows Valve’s official Steam Support pages, and button hold times are listed separately for the Steam Deck LCD and the Steam Deck OLED. Valid as of 20 October 2026.

First steps for any problem

Before you reset anything, go through the three steps Valve recommends first:

  1. Install updates: Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates.
  2. Restart the Deck: Steam > Power > Restart.
  3. Close or disable any third-party apps you installed in Desktop Mode.

Valve also warns that software installed outside flatpak (for example via pacman) may be wiped by the next SteamOS update.

Steam Deck is frozen

Force a restart by holding the power button. Timing differs by model, according to Valve’s guide:

SituationSteam Deck LCDSteam Deck OLED
Forced restarthold power for 4 shold power for 7 s
Still not respondinghold power for 10 shold power for 16 s
Charging LED dims after plugging inafter 3–5 safter 15 s

Steam Deck won’t turn on

  • Brand-new Deck LCD: it ships in a low-power shipping mode. Connect it briefly to the included power supply before turning it on for the first time. The Steam Deck OLED turns on without a charger if you hold the power button for 7 seconds.
  • Watch the LED next to the charging port: plug in the power supply. If the LED lights up, the Deck is charging. After a moment (LCD 3–5 s, OLED 15 s) the LED dims as normal.
  • LED blinks when you press power: the battery is flat. Connect the included power supply directly to the Deck and let it charge for at least 15 minutes.
  • It charges, but the power button does nothing: hold Volume + while turning the Deck on. In the BIOS menu choose Continue to carry on booting.

A note on charging: the Steam Deck has no fast charging (Fast Charge or Quick Charge); it charges over USB Power Delivery. After a long time on the charger it may show less than 100%. That is intentional, to protect battery health, not a fault.

Battery storage mode as a hardware reset

Battery storage mode also works as a hardware “reset”:

  1. Turn the Deck off, hold Volume + and press power.
  2. In the BIOS, go to Setup Utility > Power > Battery storage mode and confirm.
  3. The Steam Deck LCD confirms with three LED blinks; the Steam Deck OLED blinks blue twice after about 8 seconds.
  4. To wake the Deck, plug in the power supply and turn it on.

Controls, sound and Bluetooth

  • Buttons or sticks don’t respond: open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs. Hold B to exit the test. Holding the Steam button shows a list of shortcuts.
  • No sound from the speakers: disconnect other audio devices (Bluetooth, USB-C, the 3.5 mm jack, even a TV), switch the output away and back, check Steam > Settings > Audio > Enable UI Sounds and restart. On the Steam Deck LCD, the built-in microphone doesn’t work while something is plugged into the 3.5 mm jack. On the OLED it does.
  • A Bluetooth device isn’t listed: under Settings > Bluetooth, turn on Show all devices. If the connection is flaky, forget the device and pair it again.

A game crashes or won’t start

Valve’s advice: update the system, check the game’s Deck Verified rating, force Proton in the game’s properties (Properties > Compatibility > Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then pick the newest Proton) and lower the graphics settings. If the problem persists, try Beta Participation under Steam > Settings > System, where fixes may land sooner. If a game won’t run locally at all, try GeForce NOW.

Recovering SteamOS: gentlest option first

If nothing above has helped, start with the step that keeps the most data:

OptionWhat it doesYour data
Previous Brolls back to the previous system versiongames and saves stay
Factory Resetfactory reset from Settings, reinstalls Steamwipes all local data including games
Repair SteamOS (from USB)reinstalls SteamOStries to keep games and personal data
Re-image Device or Wipe Device & Install SteamOS (from USB)installs a clean SteamOSwipes everything

Rolling back to the previous version (Previous B)

  1. Shut the Deck down completely: Valve’s recovery page says to hold power for 10 seconds, ideally while connected to the charger. If a Steam Deck OLED is unresponsive, hold power for 16 seconds (see the table above).
  2. Hold the … button and press power. Keep holding … until the SteamOS menu appears.
  3. Choose the second entry, Previous B.

The same menu also offers ERASE USER DATA FROM DECK, which wipes user data without booting into Gaming Mode.

Factory reset

Go to Steam > Settings > System > Factory Reset. It wipes all local data including games and reinstalls Steam. The Re-install SteamOS option may need an internet connection.

Recovery from USB

  1. Download the official SteamOS image from Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair page.
  2. Prepare a USB drive of at least 8 GB. On Windows, write the image with Rufus; on Mac and Linux, use Balena Etcher.
  3. Turn off the Deck and plug in the USB drive (directly or through a hub).
  4. Hold Volume Up and press power. Release Volume Up when you hear the chime.
  5. In the Boot Manager, select EFI USB Device. The screen stays black for a while.
  6. In the recovery environment, choose Repair SteamOS, or for a completely clean system, Re-image Device or Wipe Device & Install SteamOS on the desktop. Recovery tools opens a command line for the boot partition.

You don’t need to disable Secure Boot on the Steam Deck for this. The same USB recovery is also the way back if you installed Windows on your Deck.

Care, warranty and contacting Valve

Clean the screen with a dry microfibre cloth. Put alcohol only on the cloth, never directly on the screen. Wipe the vents with a dry cloth and don’t use compressed air. The Deck can be stored between −20 and +60 °C and should be used between 0 and +35 °C.

Report bugs on GitHub or in the Steam Deck forums; if nothing helps, open a Steam Support ticket. Valve offers a one-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship; for consumers in the EU this warranty doesn’t apply, and your statutory rights in the country of purchase apply instead.

FAQ

How do I force restart a frozen Steam Deck?

Hold the power button for 4 seconds (OLED 7 s). If the Deck still doesn’t respond, hold it for 10 seconds (OLED 16 s).

Why won’t my Steam Deck turn on and the LED blinks?

A blinking LED when you press power means a flat battery. Connect the included power supply directly to the Deck and let it charge for at least 15 minutes.

Will a factory reset delete my games?

Yes, Factory Reset wipes all local data including games. A gentler option is rolling back to the previous system version via Previous B, which keeps your games and saves.

How do I recover SteamOS from USB?

Download the official SteamOS image, write it to a USB drive of at least 8 GB (Rufus or Balena Etcher), hold Volume Up while powering on, select EFI USB Device and choose Repair SteamOS or Re-image Device.
