The Mistlands are Valheim’s sixth biome and the first one where you can barely see a few steps ahead. A Wisplight pushes back the thick mist, Seekers lurk inside it, and the Infested Mines hide the road to the Queen. This guide covers what to pack, how to get into magic and Eitr, which crafting stations to build and how to find the boss. It applies to Valheim 1.0 after patch 1.0.20 from 15 October 2026.
When to head into the Mistlands
The Mistlands arrived on 6 December 2022 with patch 0.212.7 and sit between the Plains and the Ashlands in the biome order. You need to beat Yagluth first. His Torn Spirit is what lets you build a Wisp Fountain, and without the fountain there’s no Wisplight, your main answer to the mist.
You arrive with Plains gear, meaning Black Metal. The Mistlands then give you the next tier, Carapace. Where the biome fits in the bigger picture is shown in our biome order guide, and the previous boss fight is covered in the Yagluth guide.
A bit of history: when the update launched in 2022, the Mistlands only generated in old worlds in areas players hadn’t explored yet.
The mist and the Wisplight
The mist heavily limits how far you can see, and you’ll often spot an enemy only once it’s on top of you. A Wisplight clears it. You carry it with you and the light follows you around, and there are stationary versions too. Here’s how to get one:

- Beat Yagluth and grab the Torn Spirit.
- Build a Wisp Fountain.
- The fountain gives you Wisps.
- Craft a Wisplight from the Wisps.
Version 1.0 tamed the mist a little. The Wisp Light, Wisp Torch and Mistwalker clear mist over a larger radius, and every Mistlands weapon now clears mist too. Gear from the biome also has higher durability.
Pack a Feather Cape as well. It softens falls, which you’ll appreciate both in the Mistlands and in the Queen’s lair.
What lives in the mist
The main threat is the Seekers in several forms: Seeker, Seeker Brood and Seeker Brute (Soldier). The Gjall floats through the air and Ticks crawl along the ground. Peaceful creatures include Hares and Hens. The Dvergr are friendly until you anger them. You’ll also meet Munin.

Hens are worth bringing home. You can buy an egg from Haldor the trader or let a hen lay one. A chick hatches from the egg, and hens lay more eggs.
Infested Mines and the road to the Queen
The Mistlands added a new dungeon type, the Infested Mines. Inside you’ll find a Vegvisir that shows you where The Queen is, though not in every mine. Mostly, though, you’re here for Sealbreaker Fragments, tucked behind breakable glass or sitting on pedestals.
The first time, the Queen isn’t summoned at an altar. You craft a Sealbreaker from nine Sealbreaker Fragments at the Galdr Table and use it to open the Infested Citadel, where she’s already waiting. Carapace armour works as a tank set for this fight. The full battle is in our Queen guide. Beating her gets you the Majestic Carapace, which unlocks the Artisan Press and with it the Drakkar, the only ship that reaches the Ashlands.
Magic and Eitr
The Mistlands brought magic to Valheim. It runs on Eitr, a new resource you get from food. You cast spells with magic staffs and level two new skills, Elemental Magic and Blood Magic.
Eitr dishes are cooked from the biome’s ingredients, for example Yggdrasil Porridge, Seeker Aspic, Stuffed Mushroom or Misthare Supreme. How to combine food for health, stamina and Eitr is covered in our food guide.
New stations and materials
The Mistlands added several stations and structures you can’t progress without:
- Black Forge with the Cooler upgrade, the forge for the new gear.
- Galdr Table with the Rune Table upgrade, where you craft the Sealbreaker among other things.
- Eitr Refinery, which makes Refined Eitr. The Galdr Table unlocks once you’ve refined your first batch.
- Mortar and Pestle, an upgrade for the Cauldron.
- Wisp Fountain and Sap Extractor.
Mistlands materials: Black Core, Black Marble, Sap, Soft Tissue, Yggdrasil Wood, Wisp, Sealbreaker Fragment, Scale Hide, Hare Meat, Seeker Meat, Jotun Puff, Magecap, Royal Jelly, Bilebag, Blood Clot, Carapace and Mandible.
