When The Witcher 4 comes out

CD PROJEKT RED gives a planned release window of 2028 for The Witcher 4. That’s the target the studio uses both in its results for the first half of 2026 and in its investor presentation. No specific day or month has been named so far.

The platforms are also still unknown. If you come across a specific date or a list of consoles, it isn’t official information from CD PROJEKT RED. As soon as the studio announces a date or platforms, you’ll find it in our Witcher news.

Ciri takes the lead in a new saga

The Witcher 4, officially also written as The Witcher IV, is a single-player open-world RPG. CD PROJEKT RED presents it as the start of a new saga. The main character is no longer Geralt but Ciri, who sets out on her path to become a witcher.

The studio revealed the game on 13 December 2024 with a cinematic reveal trailer, made in collaboration with Platige Image. According to CD PROJEKT RED, Geralt will hit the trail one more time in the Songs of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3 before Ciri takes over as the main protagonist.

Unreal Engine 5 and the tech demo

The Witcher 4 is being built in Unreal Engine 5. CD PROJEKT RED confirmed this itself when it presented a tech demo on Steam titled The Witcher 4 – Unreal Engine 5 Tech Demo.

The demo came out on 3 June 2025. The studio stated explicitly that it isn’t gameplay from the game. The demo shows the technology, not how The Witcher 4 will look or play.

Where development stands

According to CD PROJEKT RED, The Witcher 4 is in full production. As of 31 July 2026, 519 developers were working on it, making it the largest team at the studio. The figure comes from the investor presentation for the first half of 2026.

What comes out before The Witcher 4

CD PROJEKT RED has a clear plan up to 2028: one large Witcher-themed release every year.

Songs of the Past

Songs of the Past is the third paid expansion for The Witcher 3. It launches in 2027 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, but not on PS4, Xbox One or the original Switch. It takes you to the new region of Letten, it’s being co-developed with Fool’s Theory, and its scope is meant to be comparable to Blood and Wine. You can add it to your Steam wishlist.

Remastered isn’t The Witcher 4 or a remake

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered from 29 September 2026 isn’t a new game. According to CD PROJEKT RED, it’s an updated version of the same game: owners got it for free, and saves and achievements carry over. While you wait for The Witcher 4, it’s a good moment to go back to The Witcher 3. What Remastered brings and what it costs is in our guide to the Remastered versions.
