Xbox has started rolling out one of the most requested features on the platform. Mythic Achievements went live for members of the Xbox Insider program today, and the idea is simple: unlock every achievement in a game and you get one extra, special achievement on top. If you already have a 100% completion somewhere in your history, you don’t need to touch the game again – the Mythic Achievement is handed out retroactively.
What Mythic Achievements actually do
The launch was confirmed by Xbox in an official blog post, after the system leaked earlier this month. In practice, Mythic Achievements are Xbox’s answer to PlayStation’s Platinum Trophies – a visible mark on your profile saying you finished a game completely. PlayStation has had that since 2008, so the platform that introduced achievements and Gamerscore with the Xbox 360 back in 2005 is finally closing the loop. New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma already confirmed plans for the system back in August.
One detail achievement hunters will like: achievements added later through post-launch updates or DLC are not required for a game’s Mythic Achievement. Only the original set counts.
- Available now, but only for Xbox Insiders.
- Games as far back as the Xbox 360 era are eligible.
- Already completed games get their Mythic Achievement retroactively once you boot up your profile.
- DLC and post-launch achievements are excluded from the requirement.
New Gaming tab and progress tracking
Xbox says the point of the feature is to celebrate your gaming history, and the profile is being reworked around that. Profiles are getting a Gaming tab that shows achievement progress, Gamerscore milestone badges and the Mythic Achievements you’ve earned, so your friends can see them too.
To make the hunt easier, a progress bar now sits at the top of each game’s achievement list. It also lets you filter original achievements from add-ons, so you can tell at a glance what still stands between you and Mythic status. That progress information appears across Xbox surfaces, including the Guide and the achievement detail pages. If you want to know what else Microsoft has been testing lately, we cover it in our Xbox news section.
How it compares to other platforms
The completion badge is far from universal across the industry. Nintendo has no achievement system at all, and Steam tracks completed games but has no equivalent of the Platinum. Sony, meanwhile, sent out a survey this year hinting at possible changes to its Trophy system.
Which games to aim at
The example game used in the announcement is Gears of War: E-Day, which launches on October 6 – the same title that recently showed up in Xbox Cloud Gaming. Beyond that, the release slate is dense: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and GTA 6 are due later this year, Fable arrives early next year, and Clockwork Revolution is slated for 2027. If you plan to farm Mythic Achievements, you won’t be short on targets.
Many of these will land on Xbox Game Pass, and we break down what the individual plans contain in our Game Pass overview. For now, Mythic Achievements stay limited to the Insider program, and Xbox hasn’t said when the feature will reach everyone else.
