A Daeva (pronounced roughly “DEH-va”) is a being in AION 2 that has gone through ascension, the transformation from an ordinary human into a winged demigod warrior. Your character becomes one as early as level 5 as an Elyos and at level 6 as an Asmodian, as part of a mandatory main story quest. Ascension is what gives you wings and the ability to fly.
This guide covers AION 2, not the original AION from 2009. Most of what you’ll find when you search for “Daeva” describes a sixteen-year-old game, and ascension worked differently there: it only came at level nine and was a long ceremony. In AION 2, by contrast, it’s one of the first things you do.
The official Steam description confirms that ascension will be in the global version too: “Choose your faction, ascend as a Daeva, and fight a faction war”. The specific levels, quest names and NPC name, however, come from the Korean and Taiwanese version, which has been running since 19 November 2025.
The key points in five bullets
- A Daeva is a character after ascension, and in the game that’s you. It isn’t a race or a class, it’s a status that both factions go through.
- Ascension happens at level 5 for Elyos and at level 6 for Asmodians, through a single main story quest with the NPC Asahr in the Ascension Subspace.
- You only get wings through ascension. Until then your character can’t fly, which is a fairly big detail for a game that sells itself on aerial combat.
- Ascension is mandatory and can’t be skipped. It gates all further progression: Daevanion, Stigma and the gear systems.
- The word “Daeva” has at least six different meanings in the game: it’s in the name of a dungeon, a Founder’s Pack chest and the paid subscription. We untangle them below in a table of their own.
What Daeva means in AION 2
A Daeva is a being that has gone through ascension: a human who has become a winged demigod warrior. In AION 2 it describes your own character, not some group of NPCs in the background of the story. The whole game starts with you as a mortal, and after a few dozen minutes you stop being one.
It’s pronounced roughly “DEH-va”, with a drawn-out first “e” and the stress on the first syllable. It’s one of the questions people genuinely ask search engines, and yet nobody answers it.
A Daeva isn’t an Elyos or an Asmodian. It’s a status, not a race. Players of both factions go through ascension, just at a different level and through a different quest. Which side you choose and what it means for how you play is covered in the article on the Elyos and Asmodian factions. It has nothing to do with your class: every one of the global version’s eight classes becomes a Daeva, as summarized in the AION 2 class overview.
One more small thing for the curious: the word “daeva” comes from Persian mythology, where it refers to supernatural beings of a rather malevolent kind. NCSOFT borrowed it but flipped the meaning. In Atreia, as the game world is called, a Daeva is a hero, not a demon.
When and how you become a Daeva in AION 2
You become a Daeva at level 5 as an Elyos and at level 6 as an Asmodian. In both cases the main story line leads you there, so you don’t need to look for anything: the quest comes to you. Both paths also end with the same NPC, just by a different route.
| What | Elyos | Asmodians |
|---|---|---|
| Ascension level | 5 | 6 |
| Quest name | Fledgling Wings | Spread Your Wings |
| Starting region | Poeta | Ishalgen |
| Path to the quest | From Ishtar Castle via Dawn Legion Forward Base | Via Shadow Forest and Isolated Lake |
| NPC | Asahr | |
| Where ascension takes place | Ascension Subspace, an instanced space just for you | |
Elyos start in Poeta, specifically as a prisoner in Ishtar Castle; the story takes them to the Dawn Legion Forward Base and from there to the quest Fledgling Wings. Asmodians start in Ishalgen and head through Shadow Forest and Isolated Lake to the quest Spread Your Wings. Different route, same destination.
Ascension isn’t optional and can’t be postponed. According to the in-game quest tables as compiled by AION2 Hub, it’s the moment that “gates the rest of your progression”. Without it, you simply can’t move on. So it’s not a quest you could skip in favor of something more rewarding.
You can’t mess it up or miss it either. There’s no wrong choice, you don’t get worse wings for progressing slowly and there’s nothing to think over. The only practical advice: take the quest as soon as it appears. If you go off doing side quests instead of the main line and overlevel, you’ll get to it later. You won’t lose anything, you’ll just be stuck on foot for longer. What the rest of the climb looks like is described in the AION 2 leveling guide.
What ascension unlocks
Ascension isn’t a reward at the end of the early game but the key without which the other locks won’t open. It doesn’t just give you wings. It opens up a whole range of systems that form the backbone of play at higher levels.
| Level | What unlocks | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 5 (Elyos) / 6 (Asmodians) | Ascension, wings, flying | The gateway to everything else |
| 12 | Daevanion | A board system of nodes that strengthens skills |
| 23 | Stigma | Advanced skills you choose yourself |
| 50 | Level cap after Chapter 1 (KR/TW) | The limit all progression is heading toward |
Wings and flight. This is the main and immediate payoff. According to the Steam description, flight isn’t a travel mechanic but the way you fight, explore and impose your will on the world, and the ascension quest is literally the moment that sentence starts applying to you. How flying works in practice, what wings can do and why they aren’t just cosmetic is covered in the article on the wings and flying system.
Daevanion and Stigma. Daevanion is a board system of nodes that strengthens individual skills; its crystals drop from hideouts, among other places. Stigma are advanced abilities you choose and equip in a limited number of slots. Both have their own economy and their own pitfalls, and both are explained in the article on the Stigma system. Here we only name them.
Aerial combat and PvP. Only as a Daeva do you get to the content people play AION for: faction clashes in the air. What the combat itself looks like and why the game offers two targeting modes is described in the article on the AION 2 combat system; where you fly to fight is summarized in the Abyss guide.
Watch out: “Daeva” means six different things in AION 2
If you’ve seen the word “Daeva” in the name of a dungeon or a chest, it wasn’t a typo. NCSOFT uses it across the game for completely different things, and that’s the main reason people get lost with this term. Anyone who types “aion 2 daeva” into a search engine today mostly gets guides for a dungeon boss.
| Name | What it is | Where you’ll come across it | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daeva | Your character’s status after ascension | Steam description, story, trailers | This article |
| Citadel of the Fallen Daeva | Expedition dungeon added in Chapter 1 | Video guides in search results | Dungeon overview |
| Daeva’s Campaign Supply Chest | Founder’s Pack chest, identical in all three versions | Founder’s Pack offer | Early access and Founder’s Packs |
| Daeva Pass | Paid battle pass | In-game offer, guide videos | Price, F2P model and cash shop |
| Daeva Express | Chapter 1 item for instantly clearing garrisons in a region | Patch notes | Chapter 1 patch notes |
| Daeva Look Change Week | Cosmetic event with a discount on appearance changes | Patch notes, in-game announcements | Chapter 1 patch notes |
A practical rule: whenever you see “Daeva”, look at what comes after the word. “Daeva” on its own is you. “Daeva Pass” is the subscription and “Fallen Daeva” is a dungeon. Neither has anything to do with your character’s ascension.
The most common specific confusion is about the Founder’s Pack chest: people ask what’s inside and whether that makes the more expensive version worth it. It doesn’t: the chest contents are identical in all three tiers, and the difference between them is purely cosmetic.
Ascension in the original AION and in AION 2
In the original AION, ascension was a ceremony you had to wait for. In AION 2 it’s a gate you pass through in the first minutes, and everything else is built on top of it. It’s the single biggest difference between the two games in this area, and for a veteran of the original game it may even come as a surprise.
| Element | Original AION (2009) | AION 2 |
|---|---|---|
| When ascension happens | Level 9, completed around level 10 | Level 5 (Elyos) / 6 (Asmodians) |
| How long it is | A chain of campaign quests | One quest with the NPC Asahr |
| Where it culminates | A formal ceremony in the faction’s city | Instanced Ascension Subspace |
| What it gives | Immortality, wings, flight | Daeva status, wings, flight |
| Narrative role | A milestone in the middle of the early game, a reward for the story you played | An entry gate you can’t progress without |
In the original game it was a narrative high point: Asmodians had to find the imprisoned Munin in Ishalgen, collect cards and go through a vision, and it all culminated in a ceremony led by High Priest Balder in the Great Temple of Pandaemonium. None of that is in AION 2.
What stayed the same: the lore essence. A human becomes a winged demigod being, both factions go through ascension and the reward is wings. So the timing and the form changed, not the meaning. You’ll find a full comparison of the two games in the article AION Classic vs AION 2.
Two search traps to watch out for
The first trap: the top search result is a wiki for the 2009 game. Its definition of a Daeva roughly carries over to AION 2, which is why search engines like to quote it so much, but the mechanics around it don’t apply. The page knows nothing about AION 2 and doesn’t claim to.
The second trap is trickier: the “Daeva Potential Guide” on the aiononline.plaync.com domain is an official NCSOFT page, but for AION Classic, not AION 2. It’s from 2025, looks completely trustworthy and describes a system that doesn’t exist in AION 2. You won’t find any “Daeva Potential” in the sequel. It’s the best proof that an “official source” and the “right source” aren’t the same thing. With this brand you need to check not only the date but also which of the three live games the source is talking about.
What Daeva means in the story
In AION 2, Daevas are the elite of both factions: ordinary people don’t fly and don’t fight in the Abyss. Ascension is therefore not just an unlocked ability but a way into the ranks of the chosen. That’s also where the game’s tone comes from: from level five on, the world treats you differently.
AION 2 takes place two hundred years after the events of the original game. That’s NCSOFT’s official wording, and it’s also the reason a lot has changed without contradicting the original lore.
The Balaur are a draconic race and the common enemy of both factions; you can’t play as them. They are the third party in the conflict, the reason the Elyos and Asmodians at least occasionally look in the same direction. Ascending to Daeva is just the start – the GamersTogether shop also has AION 2 merch to celebrate your progress outside the game.
The lore is woven even into the descriptions of places you just pass through. The hideout Cave of the Desperate is described in the game as the place where defeated Guardians hid from the Balaur. One sentence in a dungeon description, and yet it tells a whole story of defeat.
This is where the lore ends and another article begins. Why the Elyos and Asmodians hate each other, what happened to the Tower of Eternity and how the whole conflict started is covered in the article on the story and lore of AION 2. To understand ascension, it’s enough to know that the Daevas are the ones fighting that war.
Will ascension be the same in the global version?
It’s certain that ascension will be in the global version. The official Steam description confirms it directly (“ascend as a Daeva”), so it isn’t content added later in some patch but part of the game from the start.
The specific numbers and names remain uncertain. Levels 5 and 6, the quest names and the NPC name come from the Korean and Taiwanese version. NCSOFT hasn’t published anywhere what content the global version will launch with, and the developer account’s pre-launch FAQ on Steam is silent on it too. Early quests, however, change the least of anything between versions, so this is one of the few details in the whole hub where a match can be expected.
Dates: early access starts on 30 September 2026 and is only for Founder’s Pack owners, and the full free-to-play launch for everyone is on 5 October 2026. The game runs on PC only, via Steam or the PURPLE launcher. The details are summarized in the article on the AION 2 release date.

FAQ
A Daeva is a being that has gone through ascension: an ordinary human who has become a winged demigod warrior. In the game that’s you. Your character becomes a Daeva at level 5 as an Elyos or at level 6 as an Asmodian, through a main story quest. Ascension gives you wings and opens up systems that stay locked without it.
Elyos ascend at level 5 through the quest Fledgling Wings, Asmodians at level 6 through the quest Spread Your Wings. On both sides the quest leads to the same NPC, Asahr, into the instanced Ascension Subspace. These details come from the Korean and Taiwanese version and haven’t been officially confirmed for the global version yet.
You get wings at the exact moment of ascension, so at level 5 as an Elyos and at level 6 as an Asmodian. Until then your character can’t fly. It’s one of the first things you do in the game, in practice within the first hour of play. Wings aren’t just cosmetic, either: they can be upgraded and add stats.
It’s pronounced roughly “DEH-va”, with a drawn-out first “e” and the stress on the first syllable. The second “a” blends in, so pronouncing it syllable by syllable as “da-e-va” is inaccurate.
No. Elyos and Asmodian are factions, the two sides of the conflict you choose between when creating your character. Daeva is a status that players of both factions go through, just at a different level. It has no effect on your class or stats and you can’t miss it in any way, because ascension is a mandatory part of the main story line.
Because NCSOFT uses the word across the game. Citadel of the Fallen Daeva is an expedition dungeon from Chapter 1, Daeva Pass is the paid battle pass, Daeva’s Campaign Supply Chest is a Founder’s Pack chest and Daeva Express is an item for clearing garrisons. None of these has anything to do with your character’s ascension.
No. In the 2009 AION, ascension only came at level 9 and was a chain of campaign quests that ended with a formal ceremony. In AION 2 it’s a single quest at level 5 or 6 in an instanced space. What used to be a milestone in the middle of the early game has become an entry gate you pass through right at the start.
Levels and quest names are based on the Korean and Taiwanese version, which has been running since 19 November 2025. After the global launch we’ll go through the article again and add whatever can be verified directly in the global client. Early quests are among the most stable parts of the game, so we don’t expect big changes. You’ll find more guides in the AION 2 guides section. Information verified as of 15 August 2026.
