AION 2 has been running on Korean and Taiwanese servers since 19 November 2025, almost a year before the global launch. This article sums up first impressions from playing on the Taiwan server – combat, the Unreal Engine 5 world, performance and what is left of the pay-to-win worries. The global version launches on 5 October 2026 free for everyone, with early access from 30 September 2026 for Founder’s Pack owners.
Two things up front. This is about AION 2, not the original AION from 2009 – and the impressions below describe the Taiwanese version, which is ahead of the version you will install on 5 October in terms of content. The article is based on community reactions and international reviews, not on our own playtest.
Verified as of 15 August 2026; things may change – the game gets a patch practically every Wednesday.
Five-point summary
- Combat is a hybrid: a switchable action mode and classic tab-target, not one or the other.
- The graphics and character creation get plenty of praise; according to NCSOFT, the world is 36× larger than in the original AION.
- Playing on the Taiwanese server from Europe means a ping of around 200 ms and occasional instability.
- Pay-to-win concerns have eased for the West but have not gone away: the game is free-to-play and an optional $15-a-month membership unlocks the auction house, the currency exchange and a subscriber shop.
- Playing now makes sense if you want content the global version won’t have yet. Otherwise it pays to wait for 5 October 2026.
Combat – action or still tab-target?
Both, and you can switch on the fly. AION 2 offers Action Mode (over-the-shoulder camera, crosshair) and Classic Mode – classic tab-target, a system where you mark an enemy with a click and your skills then stay locked on the target. In the Korean version, the modes are aptly named “Aion 1 Mode” and “Aion 2 Mode”.
The idea that AION 2 is a pure action game in the style of BDO or TERA is inaccurate – target lock works in action mode too. According to testers from the closed Focus Group Test, covered by both MMORPG.com and Fextralife (both in July 2025), players switch back to Classic Mode on their own in large battles.
| Action Mode | Classic Mode |
|---|---|
| Over-the-shoulder camera, crosshair | You mark the target with a click, skills stay locked on |
| Better for solo play and PvE immersion | Better for PvP and large RvR clashes (faction versus faction) |
| Narrower field of view, more mouse work | Keeps you aware of what is happening around your character |
We break down the mechanics in detail – how switching works, what Perfect Block does and how skills have changed – in our article on the AION 2 combat system.
Graphics and world size
Across sources, character creation is the most praised part of the game – NCSOFT talks about more than 200 adjustable elements. Unreal Engine 5 is most visible in the lighting, hair and cloth physics and in the skill effects, which some people may find over the top.
The claim that the world is 36× larger than in the original AION comes from NCSOFT, but the editors of mein-mmo.de repeated it independently in their analysis – so it is not just Steam marketing. Flying has the more practical impact, though.
NCSOFT promises “full aerial freedom in every region”, meaning flight without restricted zones, plus underwater exploration. Wings are not cosmetic, either: they are upgradable gear up to +10 with a 100% success rate, giving Flight Power as well as attack, defense and accuracy. More in our article on wings and flying.
One thing about flying remains open. The game’s slogan is “the only MMORPG built for aerial combat with wings”, but sources disagree on whether you can actually fight in the air, or whether flying is mainly for travel and exploration. There is no official confirmation yet – treat it as unresolved.World size ratio: the original AION versus AION 2 according to NCSOFT’s figures.
Performance and tech
The Focus Group Test ran on an RTX 5070, but NCSOFT lists the RTX 2070 as its optimization target – with the caveat that the recommended configuration assumes 1080p and a low graphics preset, not 1440p on high detail. Both configurations are broken down in our article on system requirements.
Playing from Europe is another story. Community reports repeatedly agree on a ping of around 200 ms and occasional instability, including DDoS attacks – you are on a server outside your region. In PvE you can live with it; in PvP you feel it immediately.
“I like the game, but playing it with 200 ping hurts. I’ll probably have to wait for the global version.” – a player’s comment under a review of the Taiwanese version
Class balance – is the Gladiator still the strongest DPS after the Brawler arrived?
This is a debate, not a settled answer. Part of the community claims the Gladiator lost its position as the strongest damage class once the Brawler was introduced – the most cited source is a video from the Society Of Gaming channel from 30 June 2026. It is the opinion of a single community source, not a proven fact.
Two concrete things argue against it. The PVPBank site ranks the Gladiator first in its Season 2 PvP S-tier, and the balance pass from 8 July 2026 actually buffed its personal damage – the skill Zikel’s Blessing stopped affecting the whole party in exchange for stronger solo performance. We cover the full class ranking in our class overview and tier list.
Watch the date on any PvP impression. The balance pass from 8 July 2026 brought a blanket 30% reduction in PvP damage – reviews and comments from late 2025 and the first half of 2026 therefore describe a noticeably different game. We sum up what changed in the Chapter 1 patch notes.
And here is the angle you get on the Taiwanese server that global players don’t have yet: the entire content of the Chapter 1. Lands of Sand and Snow update (1 July 2026, the community also knows it as “Land of Sand and Frost”) – the Morheim and Eltnen regions, a higher level cap and months of play with the Brawler class, which the global version won’t have at launch.
Pay-to-win concerns – what has changed since the launch in Korea and Taiwan
The most sensitive topic of the whole game has a fairly clear timeline:
- 19 November 2025 – launch in Korea and Taiwan. For a short time, the cash shop sells items that directly boost combat power for the premium currency Quna.
- Within 15 hours of launch – after the community’s reaction and a drop of more than 15% in NCSOFT’s share price, the items are pulled from sale.
- Shortly after – a public apology from the studio’s management.
- 8 July 2026 – NCSOFT publishes the document “Team Update: Business Model / Our Approach” with the model for the Western version.
That document is key, because two inaccurate versions of what it says are circulating. Here is what holds: the game is free-to-play and at the same time there is an optional $15-a-month membership, which unlocks three things – the Market (auction house), the exchange between the in-game currency Kina and premium Quna, and a subscriber shop.
So the claim “AION 2 is a subscription game” is false, and “AION 2 is pure free-to-play with no subscription” is incomplete. One detail straight from the announcement is worth mentioning too: for the cash shop, NCSOFT writes that it does not affect progression, but it describes battle pass rewards as “cosmetics, items and enhancement materials” – and does not repeat that assurance for them. You will find a breakdown of prices in our article on the price, F2P model and cash shop.
Commercially, the Asian launch was one of the most successful Korean launches of the year, but the specific revenue figures have no traceable primary source, so we don’t quote them. The community on Reddit is still watching the Western model skeptically.
Is it worth playing now, or should you wait for the global launch?
Let’s start with the numbers, because it matters more than any argument: from mid-August 2026 there are roughly seven weeks left until the full launch and five days less until early access. A short time, which tips the decision in favor of waiting. We go through the exact dates in our article on the AION 2 release date.
Who should play now anyway: anyone who wants to study the systems and classes with a head start, and above all anyone who wants to see content the global version won’t have yet – a higher level cap, new regions and a settled class meta. NCSOFT’s developers confirmed in June 2026 that the global servers launch with an “accumulated backlog” of content that they will release gradually. So the Taiwanese version’s lead won’t disappear on 5 October.
Who shouldn’t: anyone who wants to play for keeps. Progress most likely won’t carry over between regions (character migration has not been confirmed), your ping from Europe will be around 200 ms and you will download the client twice – the Taiwanese one (roughly 55 GB according to community figures) and then the global one at 100 GB according to the official Steam page.
One more caveat: sources don’t even agree on whether you need a real VPN or whether a routing tool like ExitLag or GearUP Booster is enough. There is no official confirmation. If you decide on the Taiwanese server, you will find a step-by-step walkthrough, including this caveat, in our guide on how to play AION 2 right now.
What doesn’t hold, on the other hand, is the comforting line “wait for the West, everything will be fine there”. The Western model is friendlier than the Korean one from November 2025, but the auction house and the currency exchange sit behind a monthly membership – and that is better to know in advance than after you create your character. FAQ
You can play right now on the Taiwanese server, which has been running since 19 November 2025. Expect a ping of around 200 ms from Europe, and progress most likely won’t carry over to the global version. The global version launches on 5 October 2026 free for everyone; early access for Founder’s Pack owners starts on 30 September.
Both – the game offers a switchable Action Mode with a crosshair and a Classic Mode with classic target selection. Lock-on works in action mode too, so it is not the style known from BDO or TERA. According to testers, players in large PvP clashes often switch back to Classic for a better view of their surroundings.
At the Korean and Taiwanese launch, items that directly boosted combat power were sold for a short time, which triggered a strong reaction, and NCSOFT pulled them within 15 hours – who makes decisions at a moment like that is covered in our article on who is behind AION 2. For the Western version, the game is free-to-play and the cash shop is meant to be cosmetic, but an optional $15-a-month membership unlocks the auction house, the currency exchange and a subscriber shop.
The figure comes from NCSOFT, so it is primarily a marketing claim. However, the editors of mein-mmo.de repeated it independently in their analysis, so it is not just the Steam description and can be taken as reasonably trustworthy. The exact measurement methodology has not been published, and the figure applies equally to both versions of the game.
An open debate, not a settled answer. Part of the community says no – the most cited source is a Society Of Gaming video from 30 June 2026. On the other hand, PVPBank ranks the Gladiator first in its Season 2 PvP S-tier, and the balance pass from 8 July 2026 actually buffed its personal damage.
Yes. The Korean and Taiwanese version already has the Chapter 1. Lands of Sand and Snow update from 1 July 2026 behind it, plus months of weekly patches after it – a higher level cap, the Morheim and Eltnen regions and a settled class meta. The global version launches with eight classes, without the Brawler, and trails in content, which the developers say will be rolled out gradually.
