AION 2 launches globally on 5 October 2026, but you can already play it right now on the Taiwan server, which has been running since 19 November 2025. This guide walks you step by step through account registration, the Purple launcher and the question of whether you need a VPN or whether a gaming routing tool is enough. And since the global launch is only a few weeks away, we’ll also cover who shouldn’t bother with the whole process anymore.
Don’t mix them up: this guide is about AION 2, not the original AION from 2009 or its AION Classic variant. Search results routinely blend these three games together, and information about one doesn’t apply to the others.
Verified as of 15 August 2026. Things may change. This article describes an unofficial, community-tested way to get onto a regional AION 2 server before the global launch. NCSoft can change it at any time, and on two points (whether you need a VPN and the language of the Taiwanese client) the sources directly contradict each other. Check the current situation before you buy anything.
In short:
- The global version of AION 2 launches on 5 October 2026, with early access for Founder’s Pack owners on 30 September 2026. The Taiwanese and Korean servers have been running since 19 November 2025.
- The community recommends gaming routing tools instead of a classic VPN as the main route. We use LagoFast, and the code Magic gets you a 62% discount on it. The sources disagree on the VPN question, though; details below.
- Registration takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Downloading the Taiwanese client (about 55 GB, a community figure) takes much longer, depending on your connection speed.
- Your ping from Europe will be higher than for local players. It’s playable, but don’t expect home-server latency.
- Your progress from the Taiwanese server most likely won’t carry over, so you’ll start again on the global version.
Why the global version isn’t out yet and whether it’s worth waiting for
The global version of AION 2 has fixed dates. On 30 September 2026 advance access opens for Founder’s Pack holders, and on 5 October 2026 full free-to-play access starts for everyone. This is confirmed by the game’s official Steam page and, independently, by several other sources. You’ll find a detailed breakdown in our article on the AION 2 release date.
Korea and Taiwan have had the game live since 19 November 2025, almost a year now. This isn’t a pirate or gray-area server. It’s an official regional service run by the same publisher, NCSoft. Playing on it isn’t cheating; it just gets around the regional targeting.
What really matters, though, is working out how much time you actually have left. If you’re reading this guide in mid-August, you’re waiting about seven weeks. If it’s mid-September, you’re waiting two. And in those two weeks you’d download a 55 GB Taiwanese client, pay for a routing tool and build up progress you most likely won’t get to keep.
So our recommendation is an honest one, even if it goes against the usual tone of guides like this: the closer 5 October gets, the less sense the whole operation makes. It makes sense if you want to get a feel for the systems at your own pace, try out the classes as a dry run and show up to the global launch prepared. It doesn’t if you want to play for real and build a character you’ll stick with.
For completeness: the global version is PC only (Steam and the PURPLE launcher). A mobile client exists only for the Korean and Taiwanese versions, and there are no plans for PS5 or Xbox.
Why a regular VPN may not work reliably
NCSoft uses a so-called “soft” IP block: blocking based on IP address that can be worked around, but not ignored entirely. It detects and often rejects traffic from common commercial VPN servers. The typical symptom is the error message “Unable to connect to login server” when you try to log in.
Game-specific routing tools, such as LagoFast, work differently. They don’t hide your identity like a VPN does. Instead, they optimize the path your network traffic takes (routing, meaning data is sent along a chosen, usually faster route) to a specific game server. That’s why NCSoft doesn’t detect them the same way it detects a classic VPN. Before you try the Taiwan server, check out the GamersTogether shop for AION 2 merch too.
Here we have to be upfront, though: the sources disagree and the question isn’t settled. This isn’t a case of outdated data, but a genuine contradiction between the websites that cover the topic.
- exitlag.com and aion2.online (November 2025) claim you don’t need any identity-masking VPN. According to them, the region lock only applies at login, and choosing the right region during registration is enough.
- thebestvpn.com, on the other hand, recommends classic commercial VPNs (NordVPN, Surfshark, ProtonVPN) and claims they work.
- u4n.com (29 April 2026, the most recent of these sources) states that a real VPN is now required because of stricter IP blocks, and it counts gaming boosters themselves as VPN tools.
There are two possible explanations, and we couldn’t confirm either: either NCSoft has tightened the block since November 2025, or the individual sites simply interpret the word “VPN” differently. So treat this point as unverified. As the default route we recommend the gaming booster LagoFast, which Gamers Together partners with. We show you how to set it up in the very next section. The process has five steps:

Before you start downloading anything, check the AION 2 system requirements. The Taiwanese client takes up around 55 GB, and the global one another 100 GB after 5 October.
Creating an account: Gmail, region and Taiwanese registration
This is the step where most attempts fail, and it’s also the only part of the process that other guides describe in enough detail. If you got LagoFast premium with the code Magic, you’ll receive a Taiwanese account directly from them and can skip this whole section. The following steps are for anyone who wants to create an account themselves.
- Create a new Gmail account used exclusively for AION 2 in Taiwan. This avoids region conflicts with an account that’s already tied to another region.
- Open NCSoft’s official Taiwanese registration page and sign in with Google using the new account.
- Confirm profile sharing and decline linking any other accounts the page offers you.
- Select the Taiwan region. This is the key step that assigns your account to the Taiwanese service. You’ll know it worked when the page address contains “Taiwan” and the content is in Traditional Chinese.
If the page won’t load or registration fails, first try opening it in a private window with no browser extensions. The second common cause is a Google account that remembers an older region, which is why you use a new Gmail. If that doesn’t help either, try registering with the routing tool turned on, because the registration page itself tends to be slow from Europe.
Why Taiwan and not the Korean server
Registering on the Korean server requires a verified Korean phone number. For players outside Korea without a contact there, that’s a practically insurmountable obstacle. Taiwanese registration has no such requirement, which is why it’s the only realistic route for European players.
Downloading the client, the Purple launcher and the game language
- Download the Purple launcher from NCSoft’s website. The launcher’s own interface is in English.
- On first launch, the launcher shows the region as “Global”, even though you chose Taiwan during registration. NCSoft unified the regions inside the launcher. This is normal behavior, not a mistake in your setup.
- Log in with the same Google account. A private window may open where you enter your details again. Check “Remember login information”.
- Click the AION 2 icon, choose Early Install or Setup, pick a folder and start the download.

There is no mobile client for the global version. If you want to play AION 2 on your phone, you have to go with the Taiwanese or Korean version, but that’s a dead end as far as the global version goes, since it’s PC only.
And now the second unresolved point: the game language. aion2.online and a widely watched YouTube video describe a fully English client interface without any workarounds. exitlag.com, on the other hand, claims the Taiwanese version has no English option and that the entire interface, quests and descriptions are in Traditional Chinese. It’s a direct contradiction that we couldn’t resolve even after repeated checks, so treat it as unverified. The only certain thing is that the Purple launcher interface is in English.
This matters for your decision. If the client really is Chinese only, the “wait a few weeks” argument gets much stronger, because the global version will officially be available in English. English is one of the ten confirmed languages of the global launch.
What to expect: server population and connection quality
The Taiwanese servers are active. According to available sources, it’s common to find a group for a dungeon or a raid without a long wait, which isn’t a given for a regional server a year after launch. They’re also further ahead than the global version: they run the content from Chapter 1. Lands of Sand and Snow plus months of further weekly updates that the global version has yet to receive.
That, by the way, is the most interesting reason to go to the Taiwanese server: you’ll see a part of the game that global players will only reach later. Your ping will be worse than you’re used to. Latency from Europe to Taiwan is around two hundred milliseconds, and players report occasional instability. With a routing tool the game is playable, but these aren’t ideal conditions for competitive PvP. Be honest with yourself: this is “try it out and learn” mode, not “play for real”.

Fixing the most common problems
“Unable to connect to login server.” By far the most common message. It has two usual causes. Either the routing tool wasn’t running before you started the launcher (the order really matters, LagoFast has to be active first), or the account doesn’t have its region set correctly to Taiwan, which happens when registration went through an existing Google account tied to a different region.
The launcher shows “Global” instead of “Taiwan”. This isn’t an error. NCSoft unified the regions inside the launcher, and Taiwan simply isn’t there as a separate option.
The login window opens as a private window. Enter your details again. This is expected behavior.
The download keeps stopping. Try downloading with the routing tool turned off and only turn it on right before launching the game. Routing is optimized for game traffic, not for large data transfers.
Game rules and terms of service
Playing on a regional server is governed by its own terms. We recommend reading NCSoft’s current terms of service, especially with the global launch approaching, when changes may happen. This article doesn’t replace the official terms and isn’t legal advice.
