Crimson Desert: Best Bows

Crimson Desert: Best Bows

Getting hold of a decent bow in Crimson Desert is surprisingly hard at first. Most of what you find along the way can’t even beat Kliff’s starting weapon. The strong ones are hidden in three specific places, and their value isn’t in the stats but in the Abyss Gears they carry. Here they are, locations included.

1. Spire of Insight: the bow crafting manual

If you want to craft bows yourself, head to the Spire of Insight southeast of Hernand. The crafting manual for ranged weapons sits on a bookshelf on the first floor.

  • Entrance: thorny growth blocks the door. Burn it with Blinding Flash or any fire attack.
  • Door puzzle: pick up a small stone from the ground and put it in the bowl by the entrance. That unlocks the door.
  • Reward: reading the manual unlocks advanced bow crafting at every blacksmith on the map. From there it’s only about materials.

2. Gold-Knotted Ancestral Bow: the survival king

This bow is hidden in a trap-filled underground dungeon in Silver Wolf Mountain, far to the north of Hernand. The entrance is an inconspicuous open hatch in the ground, and it’s easy to miss.

Inside, rooms full of spinning saws and swinging pendulums await you. The bow is in a sealed chamber at the very end.

Attack 19 is nice, but the real reason to crawl in here is the Abyss Gear Life Transference. It gives you lifesteal, so every hit tops up your health. In long fights where ten enemies are chipping away at you at once, it changes how the whole battle plays out.

3. Noble Man’s Bow: the boss killer

In the Pailune region, just past the northern gate, you’ll find the point of interest Valgrind Tomb. Inside this small tomb, look for a small hole in the wall on the right. Crouch, crawl through, and you’ll find a chest with the bow.

Stats: attack 18, refinement 3, with Destruction II and Insight I already socketed. The key piece, though, is Malicebane, which increases damage against “powerful enemies”, meaning bosses.

Even if you don’t use bows, the trip is worth it: you can have the witch extract Malicebane and set it into your favorite sword. Before the fight with the Titan, that makes a noticeable difference.

You’ll naturally reach Pailune around chapter seven. If you go there earlier, be careful: enemies patrol the roads and can drop Kliff in a single blow.

Abyss Gear matters more than attack

A bow’s attack number is the least interesting figure on the weapon card. The difference between a bow with attack 18 and one with 19 is negligible; the difference between a bow with Life Transference and one without it is huge.

  • Slots: the bow needs a free slot, otherwise you can’t set gear into it. The starting bow unlocks slots gradually.
  • Socketing and extraction are handled by the witch or a blacksmith who works with Abyss technology. Gear can be removed from one weapon and moved to another, so it pays to collect weapons you won’t use, too.
  • Refinement raises the base values. On a weapon you carry for a long time, it makes more sense than chasing a new one.

When the bow has the upper hand

The bow isn’t just for picking off enemies from a distance. Here are three situations where it’s clearly a better choice than a sword:

  • Archers on the walls. You can’t reach them in melee, and their fire will take you apart.
  • Flying bosses. Against Karanda a sword is practically useless. Without Focused Shot you won’t bring her down from the sky.
  • Long fights. With Life Transference your shots refill your health, so you last where you’d otherwise run out of potions.

Don’t throw away the starting bow

Kliff’s basic bow looks weak, but once you unlock its Abyss slots and refine it, it holds up as a reliable weapon deep into the midgame. Before you start hunting for new ones, try investing in it first. For the Hidden Fangs quest, where you only use the bow to mark the Whistling Arrow war machine and your artillery does the rest, it’s more than enough.

FAQ

Where do I get materials for the bows from the manual?

You gather them by exploring ruins, mining ore and defeating bosses. Every blacksmith shows you the exact list of resources a specific bow needs in the crafting menu.

Is ranged combat better than sword and shield?

They complement each other. The bow is irreplaceable against archers on the walls, while Abyss Gears like Life Transference keep you alive in melee. It isn’t an either-or choice.

How do I set an Abyss Gear into a bow?

You need a bow with a free slot and the witch or a specialized blacksmith who works with Abyss technology. They can both socket the gear and extract it from another weapon.

Can the starting bow be upgraded?

Yes, and you definitely should. Once its Abyss slots are unlocked and it’s refined, it stays one of the most reliable weapons you have for a long time.

Where exactly is Silver Wolf Mountain?

Far to the north of Hernand. Look in the mountains for an inconspicuous open hatch in the ground. The dungeon entrance isn’t marked in any way, and it’s easy to walk right past it.
