Power Challenges are seven legendary bosses the game calls Primal Frenzy. You won’t just run into them in the open world: almost all of them are locked behind faction quests in a specific region. If a boss doesn’t spawn at the marked spot, it isn’t a bug. You simply haven’t earned that fight yet.
Overview of all seven
| Boss | Region / location | What unlocks it | Key to the fight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skevald, the Carrion King | Tommaso | nothing, you just need to find the bounty notice | red gas drains your health, so stay near the edges of the arena |
| Black Fang | Forest of Wolves, Hernand | Hernand faction quests, quest “Silence from Afar” | take out the pack first, then the wolf |
| White Horn, Shepherd of Souls | Argent Peaks, west | Pailune faction quests, quest “Deep-Rotted Sorrow” | Flame Strike: its fur burns |
| Karanda | the sky above Pailune | Pailune faction quests, quest “Queen of the Skies” | Focused Shot and a good bow; a sword is useless |
| Queen Spider | Arboria Castle ruins | high reputation with Hernand, quest “Queen’s Nest” | watch out for exploding spiderlings |
| Queen Stoneback Crab | Stoneback Crab Wetlands | Delesyia faction quests, quest “The Wolf’s Ballad” | climbing the shell and destroying crystals |
| Queen Bismuth Oreback Crab | Valley of Grief | lots of desert faction quests + “War Song of the Dusk” | Turning Slash to stun, then Cling + Pierce |
The order matches how you’ll usually reach them: Skevald is available first, the desert crab only at the very end.
How to handle each fight
Skevald, the Carrion King
The Carrion King hides in the Tommaso region and belongs to the “Lords of Unclaimed Lands” faction line. He has no requirements: just find and inspect the bounty notice right in Tommaso, then follow the golden scent trail with your lantern.
He fights in two phases and is backed by a pack of hyenas. The main threat is the red gas, which keeps draining your health. Stay near the edges of the arena, where it’s thinner, and keep food or elixirs in your quick slot.
Black Fang
The legendary wolf roams the dense Forest of Wolves in Hernand territory. You’ll find the quest “Silence from Afar” under the House Celeste tab, but it only unlocks after you’ve completed enough Hernand faction quests.
It’s a two-phase hunt, and you have to track the wolf with your lantern first. Other wolves accompany it. Take them out before Black Fang gets going, otherwise its aggressive lunges will get you the first time you’re surrounded.
White Horn, Shepherd of Souls
A three-phase monster on the frozen Argent Peaks in the west. The quest “Deep-Rotted Sorrow” starts at Skoghorn Farm under the Skoghorn tribe tab.
The trick to the whole fight is simple: its thick fur is flammable. Set it on fire with Flame Strike and you trigger an animation where it tries to shake off the flames. That’s your window for free damage.
Karanda
The harpy queen rules the sky above Pailune, and for most of the fight your sword is useless. Focused Shot is the foundation here, so bring a proper bow and knock her down from a distance.
Queen Spider
The giant spider nests in the ruins of Arboria Castle and only unlocks with high reputation with the Hernand faction (quest “Queen’s Nest”).
Her spiderlings are more of a nuisance, but some of them explode and deal heavy toxic damage. Focused Shot and fire damage take her health down fastest.
Queen Stoneback Crab
A colossal crab that disguises itself as a hill in the Stoneback Crab Wetlands. It’s more of a climbing puzzle than a fight:
- Climb onto its shell using Triple Force Jump.
- In the first phase, use Cling (R3) and Pierce (R2) on the glowing green cracks.
- In the second phase, smash the ceramic pots on the shell.
Queen Bismuth Oreback Crab
The desert variant of the crab in the Valley of Grief, and also the hardest fight in the game to reach. It requires plenty of desert faction quests plus the goblin mission “War Song of the Dusk”.
The sequence: climb onto the shell, stun it with Turning Slash, break the bismuth crystals, work the glowing cracks with the Cling + Pierce combo, and finish it off by smashing the remaining pots.
FAQ
Because faction quests keep it locked. Until you complete enough missions in that region to unlock the specific bounty notice or quest, the boss physically doesn’t exist in the world.
Focused Shot with a bow. Many of these bosses have weak points or flying phases where melee combat is impossible or suicidal.
No, they’re optional. But they give the best gear and Abyss Artifacts in the game, which make the final chapters noticeably easier.
Stay near the edges of the arena, where the gas is thinner, and keep good healing items in your quick slot. The damage comes in regular ticks, so you can out-heal it.
It depends on how you progress through the factions. Skevald comes first with no requirements, both crabs only in the late game. The desert crab is the last one even for well-prepared players.
Information verified as of 7 August 2026. Patches don’t change the fight mechanics. Before you set out, go through the regions of Pywel and the portal network so you can reach the bosses quickly. We have separate guides for the Titan and Ator, and the Urdavah Research Institute guide comes in handy too. Everything else is in the Crimson Desert section.
