The Urdavah Research Institute is the brain behind your progress in Crimson Desert. It unlocks blueprints for gear you can’t buy anywhere, raises your stamina cap and opens up wind technology. Without it you won’t get past stamina level ten, and that also means you won’t reach the highest peaks on the map.
Where to find the institute and how to reach Valtus
The research center sits in the northern part of the desert region, right in the fortified city of Urdavah. The story naturally brings you here in chapter 9, but you can make it sooner.
- Getting there before chapter 9: head north through the rocky mountains in the desert. Up on the cliffs, activate the Abyss Nexus so you can come back next time via fast travel.
- Where the director is: research director Valtus stands on the middle floor of the institute. Take the elevator up to the balcony; he’s usually there writing notes.
- If he won’t talk to you: cross the corridor to the room opposite, inspect the golden statue and come back. This little ritual unlocks the dialogue.
All research projects
Every project costs time and silver coins. The timer keeps running even when you’re elsewhere in the world, so it pays to start a long research project before you stop playing and collect the result the next day.
| Project | Time / silver | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Desert Lifestyle Research | 2 h / 1.10 | blueprints for specialized desert gear |
| Wind Energy Fusion Device | 6 h / 7 | crafting for the Propeller Spear, Gale Shield and Air Blaster |
| Gold Vein Research | 8 h / 130 | a new research branch built on gold veins |
| Bioenergy Amplification | 9 h / 11 | significantly more energy from cooked food |
| Red Seaweed Research | 18 h / 12 | raises maximum stamina up to level 14 |
| Circulating Energy Research | 20 h / 100 | blueprints for powerful gear accessories |
| High Capacity Energy Power | 22 h / 70 | crafting for A.T.A.G. Plating Mk II and Mk III |
Sorted by research time, with shorter projects at the top.
Which order to invest in
When your silver is limited, this order gives you the most bang for your buck:
- Bioenergy Amplification (9 h / 11 silver): cooking bonuses are often the only thing between you and the Game Over screen in a tough fight. The best value for the price.
- Red Seaweed Research (18 h / 12): without it, your stamina gets stuck at level 10. A must for the endgame.
- Wind Energy Fusion Device (6 h / 7): the Gale Shield changes the dynamics of both combat and moving around the map.
- The rest depends on what you’re building at the moment. Save Gold Vein Research at 130 silver for when you have silver to spare.
What each project actually does for you
Almost every row in the table says “unlocks blueprints”, but the impact on gameplay differs a lot:
- Red Seaweed Research is the only way to push stamina above level 10. Without it you can’t climb the highest peaks, and in long fights you’ll run out of breath before your enemy does.
- Wind Energy Fusion Device opens expeditions for wind weapon materials: the Propeller Spear, Air Blaster and, above all, the Gale Shield, which changes both combat and how you get across terrain.
- Bioenergy Amplification increases the energy you get from cooked food. It sounds boring until you realize food is the only thing keeping you afloat in tough fights.
- High Capacity Energy Power leads to A.T.A.G. Plating Mk II and Mk III, which is late-game gear. There’s no point getting into it before you have 70 silver to spare.
How to plan your research
The timer runs during actual play, not only while you’re standing in the institute. So the best rhythm is simple: start a long project (18 or 22 hours) before you finish playing, and collect the result the next day. Save the short two-hour projects for times when you know you’ll be back in Urdavah soon.
If a project stalls, it isn’t a bug. For some of them you have to talk to the research assistant after a while or bring a specific sample. Red Seaweed is the one that catches people out most often.
FAQ
Yes. If you work your way through the mountains and activate the Abyss Nexus in Urdavah, you can reach Valtus earlier. Some specific projects may have their own story requirements, though.
You can’t. Time passes even while you’re doing something else. The best tactic is to start a project and go questing or mining in another region instead of waiting on the spot.
It unlocks expeditions for materials for wind weapons and shields, such as the Gale Shield. That one is useful both in combat and for getting across terrain.
For some projects, typically Red Seaweed, you have to talk to the research assistant after a while or bring a specific sample. Until you do, the project won’t progress any further.
In the mountainous northern part of the desert region. You can only reach its three tower portals by gliding, so unlock the Abyss Nexus below the cliffs first.
