LoL refunds and name changes: how to refund and change your Riot ID

Two of the most common account questions in League of Legends: how do you refund something you didn’t want, and how do you change your name? Riot has clear rules for both. You can refund an unused skin or champion within 14 days, and you have three refund tokens for older purchases. You can change your Riot ID for free once every 90 days, and there’s no paid name change. Everything applies as of 20 October 2026.

LoL refunds: three conditions

Riot only refunds content that meets all three conditions at once, unless the law says otherwise:

  1. it’s unused,
  2. you bought it no more than 14 days ago,
  3. it’s on the list of refundable content.

Used means used in any game, including custom games and games against bots. Once you take a skin into a match, a standard refund is off the table and only a refund token is left (see below).

What you can and can’t refund

Riot splits content into three groups: what you refund directly in the client, what only through a support ticket, and what not at all.

So you can’t refund Hextech chests or Sanctum content. How those work is covered in our guide to skins and Hextech.

If the client doesn’t offer a refund

Sometimes a refundable purchase doesn’t show up as refundable in the client. Riot recommends waiting 15 to 30 minutes and restarting the client. If that doesn’t help, submit a support ticket. The full rules are on Riot’s LoL refund policy page.

Refund tokens

Every account has three refund tokens. They cover two situations:

  • refunding unused content 14 to 90 days after purchase,
  • refunding used content within 90 days of purchase.

You get back the same amount in the same currency you paid, so if you bought something on sale, you get the discounted price back. You gain one new token per year, but you can never hold more than three. Save them for purchases you genuinely regret.

Refunding RP for money

RP (Riot Points) is the game’s paid currency. You can only get RP refunded through a support ticket, and only if:

  • the RP is unused,
  • no more than 14 days have passed since the purchase,
  • the money goes back to the original payment method, which is why it doesn’t work for prepaid cards.

For what RP costs and which bundles are available, see our RP prices guide. To see how much you’ve spent on the game so far, check our guide on tracking your spending.

Purchases by children, hacked accounts and champion updates

  • Unauthorized purchase, for example by a child: contact Player Support.
  • Purchases after your account was hacked: Riot refunds them, including any refund tokens the attacker used.
  • Champion updates: Riot doesn’t refund purchases because a champion was changed.

What a Riot ID is

Your Riot ID is the name other players see in the game, for example “EarlGreyTeemo#sip”. It has two parts:

  • Game Name: 3 to 16 alphanumeric characters, doesn’t have to be unique,
  • tagline: 3 to 5 alphanumeric characters after the # sign.

Your Riot ID is shared across all Riot games, so changing it also changes it in Valorant or TFT. It’s not your Username, the name you use to log in. That one can’t be changed.

How to change your Riot ID

Changing your Riot ID is free and possible once every 90 days. There’s no paid name change. On the web:

  1. Go to your Riot account page at account.riotgames.com and sign in.
  2. Change your Riot ID and tagline.
  3. Confirm with Save Changes.

From the LoL or TFT client you end up in the same place:

  1. Open the Shop.
  2. Go to Account.
  3. Select Riot ID Change, and the client sends you to account.riotgames.com.

Riot makes an exception to the 90-day limit if someone harasses you because of your name. In that case, submit a ticket. Riot support also describes the process on its Changing your Riot ID page.

Rules for names and taglines

  • Your name can’t contain the word “Riot” or personal information, and it can’t be offensive.
  • Once you change your tagline, you can’t go back to a region code (such as EUNE, EUW, NA or NA1).
  • The message “this Riot ID is already in use” means the combination is taken. Just change the tagline.
  • You don’t lose your Riot ID because of inactivity.
  • Your friends will see you under your new name after the change.

What about moving to another server?

Transferring your account to another server costs 2,600 RP, is one-way, can’t be refunded, and you can only move back after a 90-day cooldown. Your rank is separate on each server. All about servers is in our servers and language guide. Your Honor carries over with a transfer; see our guide to the LoL Honor system.
