Marvel Rivals is free-to-play: you download it and play without paying a cent. It’s free on Steam, on Epic and in the PlayStation and Xbox stores, and there’s no paid edition. The only thing you can spend money on is looks. Let’s go through exactly what’s paid, how the three currencies relate to each other, whether the battle pass expires and what you can earn by playing.
The whole hero roster is free too
This is the main difference from some of the competition: in Marvel Rivals heroes are neither bought with money nor unlocked by playing. NetEase said so in its official pre-launch developer diary on monetization: heroes, maps and game content are free, and nothing paid gives a stat bonus. A new hero is playable for everyone from the minute it comes out, so the difference between an account that has spent thousands and an account that hasn’t spent a thing is purely visual. Three currencies and how they relate
The game runs on three currencies, and what confuses people most is that two of them look almost the same:
- Lattice: the premium currency and the only one you buy with real money. On its own it doesn’t buy anything: it converts at a 1:1 ratio into Units, Chrono Tokens and Unstable Molecules (the material for skin color variants).
- Units: the blue currency you use to pay for costumes and bundles in the store. You get them by converting Lattice, or for free from achievements, events and battle pass rewards.
- Chrono Tokens: a currency used only for unlocking battle pass rewards; you can’t spend it anywhere else. You collect them by completing missions and events, or get them by converting Lattice.
The key split is between Units and Chrono Tokens. Units are universal and never disappear. Chrono Tokens are tied to the season: the ones earned by playing reset at the end of it, while the ones bought with Lattice carry over up to the amount you spent on them. Tokens left over after you complete the pass convert at 1,000 for 100 Units.
Lattice bundle prices differ by store and region. In the Czech Xbox Store, 100 Lattice costs CZK 29, 1,000 Lattice costs CZK 289 and the biggest bundle of 11,680 Lattice costs CZK 2,874 (checked on 12 September 2026). One Lattice therefore costs roughly CZK 0.29, and the bigger the bundle, the better the rate.
Battle pass: how it works and whether it expires
Every season has a battle pass. In Season 10, running since 11 September 2026, it’s called The Godbomb and contains ten new costume sets. There’s a free track, where you can get as far as an epic costume, and the paid Luxury Battle Pass, which you buy with Lattice.
The most important thing about it is that it doesn’t expire. NetEase puts it plainly: once you buy the battle pass, you can keep unlocking its rewards in later seasons too. So you don’t have to grind levels in the last week of the season to avoid losing skins you paid for. It’s a friendlier model than in most other shooters, where an unfinished pass is gone.
NetEase doesn’t state the exact price of the pass for Season 10. It did give a clue with Season 0: that pass cost 490 Lattice, which was reportedly half the regular season price. So count on roughly a thousand Lattice, meaning the CZK 289 bundle.
How much skins cost
Costumes are bought with Units and sold individually or in bundles of five items (the costume plus accessories for it). In its official monetization diary from December 2024, NetEase listed these bundle prices: 1,600 Units for an epic, 1,800 Units for an epic from the movie universe and 2,400 Units for a legendary. Since Lattice converts to Units one to one, an epic bundle works out to roughly CZK 460 and a legendary one to just under CZK 700.
What you can get for free
You can collect a surprising amount for free. Units drop from achievements, seasonal events and esports predictions, and you can then spend them on the same costume someone else bought with money. The free track of the battle pass gives you an epic costume alongside a spray and a nameplate. Discount promotions tied to events also come around regularly; in Season 10, for example, there’s a 20% coupon for costumes from the movie universe.
