Nintendo Switch 2 games: the biggest titles and upgrade packs

The biggest Nintendo Switch 2 games, going by the sales figures Nintendo published for 30 June 2026, are Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza and Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Below you will find the full sales chart, what a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and an upgrade pack are, which Nintendo Switch games get free improvements, and the new first-party and third-party games on the platform.

Best-selling Switch 2 games

Nintendo regularly publishes sales of its biggest titles. The figures are worldwide and include copies sold in bundles and digital sales. So this is not a quality ranking, it is what players actually bought most. Status as of 30 June 2026 according to Nintendo’s data:

What a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and an upgrade pack are

A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition bundles the original Nintendo Switch game with an upgrade pack that improves it on Switch 2. What the upgrade adds depends on the game: better visuals, new features or new modes. Nintendo Switch 2 Edition content can only be played on Switch 2. Nintendo lists the editions on its Switch 2 Edition page.

If you already own the original game, physically or digitally, you don’t need to buy the whole edition again. Just buy the upgrade pack on its own from the Nintendo eShop, the Nintendo store or regular retailers. You can keep playing the original game on Switch 1, while the upgrades only show up on Switch 2.

One catch with physical games: you can put a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition card into a Switch 1, but it only launches the Switch 1 version without the new content. How cards that don’t hold the game at all work is explained in our guide to the game-key card.

Examples of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom with ZELDA NOTES support.
  • Super Mario Party Jamboree with Jamboree TV.
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land with Star-Crossed World.
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond with Quality (4K at 60 fps) and Performance (1080p at 120 fps) modes in TV mode.
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder with Meetup in Bellabel Park.

Free upgrades: Expansion Pack and free updates

You don’t have to buy the upgrade packs for Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom if you have Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Members get them at no extra cost for as long as the membership lasts. This only applies on Switch 2, and you need to own a copy of the game. What else the Expansion Pack includes and what it costs is covered in our Nintendo Switch Online guide.

Some Nintendo Switch games also get free updates for Switch 2. These can improve resolution or frame rate, or add GameShare support. What exactly an update brings varies from game to game. Whether your old game runs on Switch 2 at all is the topic of our backward compatibility guide.
