AION Classic vs AION 2 Compared

AION Classic vs AION 2 Compared

Comparing AION Classic vs AION 2 isn’t a showdown between two versions of the same game. AION Classic is the original 2009 AION in its “classic” form, while AION 2 is a new game on Unreal Engine 5, published directly by NCSOFT. The global version of the sequel launches on 5 October 2026 on PC, with the Founder’s Pack getting you in from 30 September. And Classic isn’t going away.

This article is about AION 2, not the original AION from 2009, which is why it starts by sorting out which AION is which. At least four different things run under the AION name right now, and a big chunk of what you’ll find about them online describes a game that is sixteen years old.

The key points in five bullets

  • AION 2 is published directly by NCSOFT through Steam and the PURPLE launcher. The European AION Classic is run by Gameforge. Different product, different account, nothing carries over.
  • The biggest gameplay difference isn’t the graphics, it’s flying. In the original game, flight was tied to zones and a timer. In AION 2 it’s full movement and a progression system in its own right.
  • Combat is not purely action. AION 2 has a switchable mode: Action Mode with crosshair aiming and Classic Mode with traditional tab-targeting.
  • The Abyss has changed: the 25 March 2026 update added Chaotic Abyss, where players are split into West and East forces at the server level, regardless of race.
  • You don’t have to choose. AION Classic EU has the 4.5 “Ignite” update announced with the new Phoenix class, and the sequel launches in October. You can play both.

Which “AION” are we actually comparing?

When someone says “I play Classic”, they could mean four different games. Players in Europe usually mean AION Classic EU from Gameforge, but that’s just one of several versions running side by side.

The most interesting side branch is the Ascend server: a Classic setting with modern comforts. Flying from level one, four times the experience, double dungeon rewards and better odds when enchanting items.

Remember one thing, because it applies without exception: no progress, characters or purchases from any of these versions carry over to AION 2.

This isn’t a remaster or an upgraded version. AION 2 inherits the world, the factions and some of the terminology, but technically and mechanically it’s a different game. The table is a condensed version of the whole article, and we break down every row below.

Who publishes the game: Gameforge vs NCSOFT

This is the most common misconception among European players, and there’s real history behind it. Gameforge was not AION’s original European publisher.

  1. 25 November 2008: AION launches in Korea.
  2. 25 September 2009: the European release is handled by Codemasters Online.
  3. 28 February 2012: Gameforge takes over European operations and switches the game to free-to-play.
  4. 2023: Gameforge launches AION Classic EU.
  5. 19 November 2025: AION 2 launches in Korea and Taiwan.
  6. 30 September / 5 October 2026: global release of AION 2 under NCSOFT.

So the shortcut “Gameforge has always published AION” only holds from 2012 onward, and for AION 2 it doesn’t hold at all. The sequel is published directly by NCSOFT through NC America and distributed through two channels: Steam and its own PURPLE launcher. Who exactly leads the sequel inside the company, and why it isn’t the Throne and Liberty team, is covered in our article on who is behind AION 2.

The practical consequence: you can’t use a Gameforge account in AION 2. And if you’re planning to buy a Founder’s Pack, pick your platform before you pay. A pack bought on Steam doesn’t work on PURPLE and vice versa. Details are in the article on Early Access and Founder’s Packs.

Engine and world: CryEngine vs Unreal Engine 5

AION Classic runs on CryEngine from 2009, and it shows everywhere. AION 2 runs on Unreal Engine 5, which is the main reason the game wants a hundred gigabytes of disk space.

The claim that the sequel’s world is 36× bigger than the original AION comes from NCSOFT’s marketing and the Steam page. Treat it as a publisher’s statement, not a measured figure. In July 2026, 80.lv reported more than 200 unique dungeons, ranging from solo content to eight-player raids.

For players, the verticality is more noticeable than the numbers: when you can fly almost anywhere, the world has to be built up and down as well. Why the new game needs so much space is covered in our article on AION 2 system requirements.

Combat system: tab-target vs switchable mode

The most widespread myth about the sequel is “AION 2 is an action game without tab-targeting”. That’s not accurate, and Classic veterans won’t have to give up their playstyle.

  • Action Mode: aiming with a crosshair in the middle of the screen. It suits PvE, and target lock-on still works in it.
  • Classic Mode: traditional tab-targeting. The community prefers it for PvP and RvR because it keeps you aware of your surroundings.

The mode switch was independently confirmed by MMORPG.com and Fextralife in their coverage of NCSOFT’s Focus Group Test; 80.lv describes combat as a mix of precision, timing, positioning and classic tab-targeting. Both modes are broken down in the article on the AION 2 combat system.

Flying and Wings: the biggest real difference

Flying is the one area where the gap between the first game and the sequel is huge. In the original AION and in Classic, flight is tied to designated zones and runs on a timer; outside them you can only glide.

In AION 2 you can spread your wings practically anywhere, and NCSOFT talks about full flight freedom in every region; Steam sells the game with the tagline “The only MMORPG built for aerial wing combat”. Underwater exploration has been added too.

The key point, though, is that wings are upgradable gear, not cosmetics. Upgrading them raises Flight Power, meaning how long you can stay in the air, and with it attack, defense and accuracy. We break down the system in the article AION 2 Wings and flying.

Abyss and PvP: the end of classic Elyos vs Asmodian?

The Abyss in AION 2 isn’t a one-to-one port. Fortresses have been replaced by artifacts, there are no big sieges, GvG or Dredgion in the game, and matchmaking also pairs players of the same faction.

The biggest change came with NCSOFT’s update of 25 March 2026. It introduced Chaotic Abyss, where players are split into West and East forces at the server level, regardless of race. According to the same announcement, Spacetime Rift content keeps race-based matchmaking.

So factions aren’t going away. Elyos and Asmodians remain a choice at character creation and both sides have the same classes, but the idea that “my race decides my side in the war” no longer applies everywhere. We cover the differences in the article Elyos vs Asmodian, and the zone itself in the piece on the Abyss and PvP.

Stigma: stones vs specialization branches

Stigma exists in both games, but it works differently. In the original AION and in Classic, Stigma stones were found as drops out in the world and slotted in, so progression meant hunting for items.

In AION 2, Stigma is closer to a modern system of specialization branches for individual skills. Testers report that you can’t max out everything, so two players of the same class can end up with noticeably different abilities.

Watch out for a difference that isn’t really one: the original game also had five Stigma slots. The 25 March 2026 update raised the maximum in AION 2 to five and gave every class a new Stigma ability. The mechanics changed, not the number. Details are in the article on the Stigma system.

Classes: what has changed

Class selection works differently from the moment you create a character. In the original AION and in Classic, you picked one of four base classes (Warrior, Scout, Mage, Priest) and only specialized at level 10.

In AION 2 you pick a specific class right away, with no split into base class and specialization. Both factions have access to the same class lineup, so choosing Elyos or Asmodian won’t limit you here.

The number of classes in the global version and the names of individual classes vary across sources, and we deal with them separately in the class overview and tier list. Classic got a new class as well, by the way: Gameforge announced Phoenix for the EU version and NCSOFT added the hybrid Dread Blade in April 2026.

Monetization: Siel’s Aura vs free-to-play with cosmetics

AION Classic is free-to-play, but with Siel’s Aura, an optional paid buff that speeds up experience and item gains. Every player gets one hour a day for free, and the subscription is sold for 3, 30, 90 or 365 days. Without paying you progress more slowly, but all the content is available.

AION 2 is free-to-play too, and its cash shop is billed as cosmetic-only. On top of that there’s an optional membership for 15 dollars a month, which unlocks the Market (auction house), the exchange between the Kina and Quna currencies and a subscriber shop. That still doesn’t make it a subscription game.

A fair comparison also has to mention the incident from the Korean launch: items with a direct effect on character power were briefly on sale, NCSOFT’s stock fell by more than 15%, and the items were pulled within fifteen hours.

And one more trap on Steam: the $24.99 price isn’t the price of the game, it’s the Standard Founder’s Pack. We break down the payments in the article on price, the F2P model and the cash shop.

Platforms, servers and when you can play AION 2

  • Early access on 30 September 2026 only for Founder’s Pack owners, full free-to-play launch on 5 October 2026 for everyone.
  • The global version is PC only: Steam and PURPLE. A mobile client exists only for the KR/TW version, and consoles haven’t been confirmed.
  • Server regions: North America, South America, Europe and Asia.
  • For comparison: Gameforge launched AION Classic EU in 2023, starting from version 1.9.

As for language support, AION 2 launches in ten languages. We cover the exact dates in the article when AION 2 comes out, and the platforms in the platform overview.

Don’t want to wait until the end of September? Some players are already getting onto the Taiwanese server today. We describe the steps and the risks in the guide how to play AION 2 right now, and our impressions in first impressions from the Taiwan server.

Heads up: most of what Google shows you about AION is from 2009

Three different games are called AION, Google doesn’t reliably tell them apart, and spec sites haven’t been updated in years. The query “aion system requirements” shows it best: the top results in Czech search are the requirements of the original AION from 2009, and the actual AION 2 page only comes after them.

RequirementOriginal AION (2009)AION ClassicAION 2 (minimum)
Operating systemWindows Vista / 7Windows 8 / 10 / 11Windows 10 / 11, 64-bit

Memory1 GB RAM2 GB RAM8 GB RAM
GraphicsGeForce 6600GeForce 8600GTGTX 1050 Ti (4 GB)
Disk space30 GB100 GB

So if you come across a text that mentions one gigabyte of memory for AION, you’re not reading about the sequel. The same trap lurks in flying guides, zone maps and mechanics: older sites describe the 2009 game under a heading that looks like AION 2.

Is AION Classic still worth playing?

Yes, but with different expectations than in 2012. AION Classic EU isn’t a dead project: in February 2026 Gameforge announced the 4.5 “Ignite” update, the biggest skill rework in the history of European Classic, with the new Phoenix class, the Teva zone and RvR changes.

On the North American side, NCSOFT runs the Ascend server alongside Classic, and in April 2026 both branches got the hybrid Dread Blade class. So the original AION is still getting new content. Whether you’re loyal to the classic or the new AION 2, the GamersTogether shop has limited AION 2 merch for you.

One objective data point on interest: search volume for “aion classic” in the Czech Republic dropped from 140 searches a month in August 2025 to 40 in June 2026. That’s a signal of interest, not player numbers. Neither Gameforge nor NCSOFT publishes real figures.

The fair answer: you don’t have to choose. Classic gives you a predictable routine and a game you know; the sequel gives you a new world, different movement and a meta that will change quickly over the first few months. If you want to keep following the story of Atreia, you’ll find the background in the article on the AION 2 story and lore.

What we don’t know yet

  • What content the global version of AION 2 will launch with. NCSOFT hasn’t specified it yet.
  • Whether Chaotic Abyss will be part of the global launch build.
  • What exactly the 15-dollar monthly membership offers beyond the Market and the exchange.
  • Whether the Ascend server is available to European players or only in North America.
  • Whether the 4.5 “Ignite” update for AION Classic EU has actually been released yet.

FAQ

When can I play AION 2 and how many languages does it support?

The global version launches for free for everyone on 5 October 2026, and with a Founder’s Pack you get in as early as 30 September 2026. AION 2 launches in ten languages.

Why does Google show AION requirements with 1 GB of RAM?

Because it shows the requirements of the original AION from 2009, not the sequel. Three different games share the same name, and spec sites haven’t been updated in years. According to the official Steam page, AION 2 needs at least 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 1050 Ti and 100 GB of disk space.

Will I have to pay for something like Siel’s Aura in AION 2?

You don’t have to, but optional payments are there. AION 2 is free-to-play with a cosmetic cash shop, and it also offers a membership for 15 dollars a month that unlocks the auction house, the currency exchange and a subscriber shop. Unlike Siel’s Aura, it isn’t a speed-up buff but access to trading features.

Is AION Classic still running in 2026?

Yes, in several forms at once. Gameforge runs AION Classic EU and has announced the 4.5 “Ignite” update with the Phoenix class for it. In North America, NCSOFT runs Classic and, since August 2025, the Ascend server, which got the Dread Blade class in April 2026. Nobody publishes official player counts.

Is AION 2 a pure action game, or does it keep tab-targeting?

It keeps both. AION 2 has a switchable mode: Action Mode with crosshair aiming and Classic Mode with traditional tab-targeting. The community uses Classic Mode mainly in PvP and RvR because it keeps you aware of your surroundings. The common claim that the sequel dropped tab-targeting is therefore wrong.

Will my characters and purchases from the original AION carry over to AION 2?

No, nothing carries over. AION 2 is a standalone game with its own account and client. Characters, gear, currency and purchases from AION Classic, the retail version or a Gameforge account won’t make it into the sequel. You start from scratch no matter how many years you played the first game.

Who publishes AION 2? Is it Gameforge too?

No. AION 2 is published directly by NCSOFT through NC America, on Steam and the PURPLE launcher. Gameforge has nothing to do with the sequel. The original AION was published in Europe in 2009 by Codemasters Online; Gameforge only took over European operations on 28 February 2012 and switched the game to free-to-play at the same time.

Is AION 2 the same as AION Classic?

No. AION Classic is an older form of the original 2009 AION, while AION 2 is a new game on Unreal Engine 5 with a different publisher, client and mechanics. They share the world of Atreia, the factions and some of the terminology, but flying, combat and the Abyss work differently. Neither progress nor characters carry over between them.
