Long-range play in WARDOGS rests on three things: correctly set zeroing, the exact range to your target and whether your position is genuinely helping the team. DMRs and sniper rifles belong to the Recon tree, and that is where you unlock the monocular and the rangefinder as well. This article covers the prices and unlocks of every long-range rifle as they stand in Season 1, how to set zeroing, what the Range Finder is for, how Recon earns without firing a shot and what to avoid.
Ballistics: why aiming is not enough
WARDOGS models realistic ballistics, so a bullet takes time to travel and drops on the way. Every weapon is sighted in for a certain range, which is called zeroing. When the target is further away than your setting, the bullet lands below the point you are aiming at and you have to aim higher. That is why you need to know the range to your target.
How to set zeroing
The default zeroing is 100 meters. From there the procedure is simple:
- Find the range to your target, ideally with the Range Finder.
- Set your zeroing to that range.
- Aim and hold left Shift. The weapon steadies for a moment, which works with every weapon, not just sniper rifles.
- When the target moves further away and you cannot reset the zeroing in time, aim higher.
DMR or sniper rifle?
The game distinguishes two categories of long-range rifle: DMRs (Marksman Rifles) and sniper rifles. Both are unlocked in the Recon tree and the XP from fighting with them goes into Recon too. The prices and levels are accurate as of 15 September 2026 for Season 1, and the developers change the item order every season. A dash means the figure has not been reliably confirmed yet.
| Weapon | Category | Price per life | Unlock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scout Rifle TD | sniper rifle | $1,100 | no unlock needed |
| SKS | DMR | $2,400 | Recon 5 · $25,000 |
| Mosin Nagant | sniper rifle | $4,500 | Recon 10 · $50,000 |
| SVD | DMR | $4,800 | Recon 12 · $50,000 |
| Compound Bow | bow | – | Recon 17 |
| SV98 | sniper rifle | $5,200 | Recon 19 · $100,000 |
| MK22 | sniper rifle | $6,400 | Recon 25 · $150,000 |
| BMR-308 | DMR | $6,000 | Recon 30 · $125,000 |
| AMR 50 | sniper rifle | $8,800 | Recon 35 · $200,000 |
The most sensible starting point is the SKS. You unlock it early, at Recon 5, and recommendations agree that it has the best price-to-performance ratio among the DMRs. The Scout Rifle TD may need no unlock, but it is weak and unforgiving of mistakes, so you are better off skipping it. At the other end of the table stands the AMR 50 in .50 BMG at $8,800 per life, a weapon that makes every death expensive. All the other weapons are in the overview of WARDOGS weapons.
Working through the Recon tree
Recommendations for long-range play agree on this order:
- The start: a cheap rifle, binoculars and marking enemies. Do not buy the Scout Rifle.
- Recon 2: the monocular, a smaller and lighter replacement for binoculars.
- Recon 5: the SKS.
- Recon 18 and 19: the 6-10x MRAD scope and the SV98 sniper rifle.
Get a Range Finder alongside that for your zeroing. How XP in the trees works and what to unlock sooner is in the article on roles and progression.
Range Finder, binoculars and monocular
| Tool | Unlock | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Binoculars | from the start, $75 per life | marking enemies for the whole team |
| Monocular | Recon 2 | the same, smaller and lighter, fits into a vest quickslot |
| Range Finder | in the Recon tree | the exact range to your target |
The Range Finder is the best tool for zeroing, because it shows you the exact range and you do not have to guess. Binoculars and the monocular are for marking enemies, which is covered below. The per-life prices of the monocular and the rangefinder and their unlock fees change between seasons, and you can see the current ones at the in-game vendor.
On optics: the 6-10x Scope MRAD unlocks at Recon 18 for $40,000, and the MOA version for $45,000. Season 1 raised the price of both, they used to cost $25,000 and $30,000.
The ghillie suit
The ghillie is a camouflage suit that, according to the game’s official description, you buy precisely for long-range sniping. It has two pieces, the Ghillie Body Suit and Ghillie Headwear. The rest of the protective gear is covered in the article on armor and backpacks.
The Recon Tent structure, a camouflage tent for snipers, also serves as cover. How to build it is in the guide to building and the FOB.
How Recon earns and helps the team
Cheap and yet very profitable are the binoculars for $75. You look at an enemy through them and hold the left mouse button. That marks the enemy for the whole team and you get XP in the Recon tree plus money. When somebody then kills the marked enemy, you get an extra reward on top, even though you did not fire a shot yourself. The monocular does the same thing.
Spotting helps the team as well. Points in a match are not collected by whoever kills the most, but by the team with the most players in the Control Zone, the control area the match is fought over. By marking targets you show your teammates in the zone where the enemy is. Good firing positions with a view are offered by the towers. How capturing them works is explained in the article on the Control Zone and towers.
What is not worth it
- Scout Rifle TD: weak, and unforgiving of mistakes on top of that. Fill the time until the SKS with spotting instead.
- Camping a tower instead of fighting for the zone: a common mistake going back to the beta is sitting on a tower with a scoped rifle and never going into the zone at all. Points go to the team with the majority of players in the zone.
- An expensive kit with no reserve: the AMR 50 alone costs you $8,800 per life. If you cannot afford to lose it, the SKS and binoculars will do the job.
