In AION 2, the Gladiator is a melee attacker with a two-handed sword and one of the eight classes available at the global launch. The game data lists him as a Tank/DPS hybrid: he deals high area damage, heals for part of the damage he deals, and so lasts longer on the front line than the other offensive classes.
This guide covers AION 2, not the original AION from 2009. The Gladiator exists there too, but with different abilities, different weapons and a different place in the meta, and a large share of the English-language pages Google shows for this query describe the old game.
All specific numbers, skill names and balance changes in this article come from the Korean and Taiwanese versions of the game, which have been live since 19 November 2025. The global version launches in early access on 30 September 2026, with the full launch on 5 October 2026. After launch, we will update the article with verified data from actual play.
The key points in five bullets
- The Gladiator is a Tank/DPS hybrid. Two-handed sword (Greatsword), plate armor, area attacks and life steal (healing for part of the damage dealt). According to the game data, he has 52 skills: 43 active and 9 passive, the most of all three melee classes.
- When NCSOFT revealed the classes, it described him as a class with “powerful, wide-area skill attacks”. Game data aggregators also quote the label “master of the melee” for him.
- At low levels he feels slow and clunky. NCSOFT’s own testing from 2025 confirms it. The turning point comes with gear that adds attack speed, and for this class that is not a bonus but a requirement.
- The balance pass of 8 July 2026 shifted him from group support toward his own damage. The Zikel’s Blessing buff no longer affects the whole party, and the Murderous Burst passive now boosts your critical damage instead of weakening the enemy.
- The claim that “the Gladiator is no longer the best DPS” is the opinion of part of the community, not a proven fact. It relates to the Korean and Taiwanese meta after the Brawler class arrived, and two documented facts contradict it. We break them down in a separate section below.
Who the Gladiator is and what he does in a group
The Gladiator is a melee DPS with a two-handed sword, one of the eight classes in the global version of AION 2. The game data, however, does not list him as a pure DPS. His role is recorded as Tank/DPS, and that is exactly how he plays: in practice he is an off-tank, a second tank who picks up the extra enemies while the main tank is busy with the most dangerous target.
His weapon is the Greatsword and his armor is plate. The combination of heavy armor and life steal is why the Gladiator is the only offensive class that can stand where the blows are landing, and why international guides regularly list him among the best picks for solo play.
When the classes were revealed on 4 June 2025, NCSOFT described him as a class with powerful area attacks. For understanding the class, that matters more than any tier list: the Gladiator is not a single-target specialist; he excels against three or more targets. His numbers look bad on a boss and excellent against a pack of enemies.
In AION 2, your class choice is not tied to your faction or your character’s gender, and every character starts as an Adventurer before specializing. How the Gladiator fits among the other seven classes is covered in the class overview and tier list.
Gladiator strengths and weaknesses
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| Highest area damage among the melee classes | Slow and clunky at low levels |
| Life steal keeps him alive even without a healer | Heavily dependent on attack speed; without it the rotation falls apart |
| Enough durability to fill the second tank role | Lowest single-target damage among the offensive classes |
| Plenty of crowd control: knockdowns (knocking the enemy to the ground) and pulling enemies toward him | Struggles against very mobile classes that escape his reach |
| Very good for solo farming | Not the absolute specialist in anything at endgame |
| Works even without top-tier gear and forgives build mistakes | Without critical hits his damage drops off quickly |
Why the Gladiator feels slow at first, and when that changes
This is the most common real complaint about the class, and its origin is documented. In NCSOFT’s own test round in 2025, the Gladiator was among the least popular melee classes. Tester feedback said he felt “slow and clunky” and that his abilities “felt weak and lacked impact”.
It is important to know what that feedback referred to: a test session from 2025, not the current state of the game. Since then, the class has been changed at least twice. The class rework of 25 March 2026 brought a comprehensive rebalance, new Stigma skills and an expansion to five Stigma slots. The balance pass of 8 July 2026 then adjusted the abilities themselves; its breakdown is in a separate section below.
Community sources today describe the Gladiator’s power curve the same way: at first the animations feel heavy and the ramp-up slow, but once you stack attack speed stats, the whole rotation (the order in which you use your skills) clicks into place. One of the most watched videos about the class is literally titled “AION 2 Gladiator Is Slow… Until It Explodes”.
The practical takeaway: for the Gladiator, attack speed is not a nice bonus but the stat that changes how the class plays. Until you have it, you are playing a different game than someone who already does.
A second common complaint is related: a player with a good attack score reports surprisingly low damage. Based on the consistent recommendations in the sources, it usually has one of three causes: (a) not enough attack speed, so the rotation never gets played out in full; (b) not enough critical chance, which the Gladiator relies on; (c) using single-target skills where you should be using cleave (an attack that hits several targets in front of you). This is our editorial interpretation derived from the consensus of the sources, not a measurement.
Key Gladiator skills
According to the game data, the Gladiator has 52 skills: 43 active and 9 passive. That is the most of all three melee classes: the Templar has 41 and the Assassin 46. A higher count does not mean harder gameplay, though, since most of them are variants and specializations.
English skill names differ between sources because they come from different client versions and translations. We use the names from the current game data, and for two skills we also give the widespread alternative from an older translation in parentheses. If you come across a set of names where not a single one matches ours, it is most likely a made-up list, and at least one such list is circulating for this class.
| Skill | Role in the build | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Crushing Wave | Area pull and healing | Pulls a group of enemies to you and heals based on damage dealt |
| Leaping Slam | Gap closer: a leap that covers the distance to the target | No longer costs mana since the 8 July 2026 patch |
| Overhead Slam | Main single-target strike | Strongest against a knocked-down enemy |
| Mocking Blade | Knockdown, opens the combo | The foundation of fights against players |
| Blade Toss (Stigma) | Slows the target and lowers its defense | Key against healers who run away from you |
| Rending Blow | Basic repeatable attack | Can be specialized into a bonus against fewer than three targets |
| Sword Aura Rampage | Resets cooldowns | Backbone of the rotation against game-controlled enemies |
| Defiance | Self-cleanse of negative effects | Shared skill of all classes, specializations reworked in the July patch |
| Zikel’s Blessing | Self-buff | No longer a group buff since 8 July 2026, base effect adds accuracy |
| Focused Block | Defensive tool | What lets the Gladiator hold the front line |
Effects and numbers are based on the Korean and Taiwanese versions as of 8 July 2026. No skill data has been published for the global version yet.
Stigma skills and what the class rework changed
Stigma is the system AION 2 uses to expand and modify your character’s abilities. We explain it in the article on the Stigma system, where you will also learn that resetting it is free. For the Gladiator, this is where you fine-tune the difference between a build for packs of enemies and a build for a single target.
The class rework of 25 March 2026 raised the maximum number of Stigma slots to five and gave every class a new Stigma skill. The Gladiator got Fracturing Rush. The same update introduced the Perfect Shield Block and Perfect Parry mechanics and limited the chaining of invulnerability effects within a 30-second window. Both affect the Gladiator directly, because he relies on defense on the move.
How exactly blocking and parrying behave also depends on whether you play in action (aimed) mode or classic tab-target mode. AION 2 lets you switch between them, and for this class it makes a noticeable difference. We cover it in the article on the combat system.
Best PvE build for the Gladiator
The goal of the PvE build is to clear packs of enemies quickly and keep steady damage on bosses, with enough durability for off-tanking. The core of the rotation looks like this: Crushing Wave gathers enemies and heals you at the same time, Leaping Slam closes the distance, an area chain follows, Overhead Slam finishes the knocked-down target, and Sword Aura Rampage resets cooldowns so you can repeat the whole cycle.
The recommended stat split according to a community source from January 2026 is: Attack Power 35%, Critical Hit 25%, Combat Speed 20% and survivability (HP and defense) 20%. On gear you want Might (attack), Precision (accuracy) and Combat Speed, and on your weapon bonuses to attack, critical hit and damage against game-controlled enemies.
Among passives, it pays to prioritize Attack Preparation, Identify Weakness, Blood Absorption and Survival Stance. The first two handle the ramp-up; the other two are why the Gladiator survives a tank’s mistake.
The percentage stat split comes from a single source that does not explain how it arrived at it. Treat it as a rough community recommendation, not a calculated optimum. Where the Gladiator’s area damage pays off most is shown in the dungeon overview.
Best PvP build for the Gladiator
The goal of the PvP build is to chain crowd control and keep your opponent on the ground or in the air long enough that they die before they can react. The basic combo from the Korean and Taiwanese versions is Mocking Blade → Leaping Slam → Rage Burst, backed by a slow that cuts off your opponent’s escape route. Save Defiance for the moment an opponent locks you in a crowd control chain.
The recommended stat split for PvP differs from PvE in its order: Critical Hit 30%, Combat Speed 25%, Attack Power 25%, Accuracy 20%. On armor, critical hit resistance and movement speed are also worth it, especially against classes that run out of your reach.
One thing changes PvP more fundamentally than any build: the balance pass of 8 July 2026 reduced damage in player fights across the board by 30 percent. For the Gladiator this is rather good news: longer fights favor a class with life steal and durability, while classes built on a single burst of damage lose out. This is our interpretation of the impact, not a confirmed intention of the developer.
Where PvP takes place on a larger scale and how the Gladiator performs there is described in the article on the Abyss.
A weapon contradiction nobody addresses: some sources claim that the Gladiator uses a polearm instead of a two-handed sword in PvP. Yet the game data states that each class has exactly one main weapon, and for the Gladiator it is the Greatsword; one of the sources also lifts the polearm claim from the original AION from 2009. The Greatsword is confirmed. A polearm as a secondary weapon is not verified and does not appear in any official material.
What the Chapter 1 balance pass changed for the Gladiator
The Chapter 1. Lands of Sand and Snow update was released on 1 July 2026 on the Korean and Taiwanese versions and brought a balance pass for all eight original classes. The ability changes themselves, however, only arrived in the weekly patch of 8 July 2026, and that is the date that matters for the Gladiator. The full summary of the update is in the Chapter 1 patch notes overview.
| Skill | Change |
|---|---|
| Zikel’s Blessing | No longer affects the whole party, only you. The base effect now adds +100 accuracy, specializations reshuffled in favor of damage amplification |
| Leaping Slam | No longer costs mana |
| Murderous Burst (passive) | From “5 stacked effects reduce the enemy’s critical damage resistance” to “5 stacked effects increase your own critical damage amplification” |
| Wave Armor | Reshuffled specializations: a counterattack with a 1.5 multiplier and a double hit instead of the previous 25% chance to pull the enemy |
| Armor of Balance | Specializations reshuffled between life drain and protective armor |
| Rage Burst | Bug fix: the Overhead Slam activation did not apply when the target blocked the attack |
In one sentence: the Gladiator got less group utility and more personal damage. It is a shift from a supporting role toward selfish DPS, and it is the exact opposite of what you would expect for a class the developer is nerfing.
These changes happened on the Korean and Taiwanese versions. NCSOFT has not confirmed whether they will reach the global version in the same form.
Is it true that the Gladiator is no longer the best DPS?
Short answer: nobody knows for the global version, because it has not launched yet, and the claim circulating around this question relates to the Korean version.
Part of the community says the Gladiator lost his position as the strongest DPS after the Brawler class arrived. That is an opinion, not a measurement. The Brawler is the ninth class, added to the Korean and Taiwanese version by the Chapter 1 update on 1 July 2026; the global version starts without it, and it will arrive later. What it can do and how it plays is covered in the Brawler class guide.
Two documented facts contradict that claim. The PVPBank community tier list for Season 2 ranks the Gladiator in PvP at first place in S-tier, calling him “the undisputed champion of frontline pressure”. And the balance pass of 8 July 2026, which came after the Brawler’s arrival, gave him changes aimed at higher personal damage, not a nerf.
| Rating source | Scope of validity | PvP | PvE |
|---|---|---|---|
| LagoFast (2026 tier list, explicitly for eight classes, still without the Brawler) | Pre-launch, based on early observations from KR/TW | S-tier | S-tier |
| PVPBank (Season 2) | KR/TW Season 2, from 21 January 2026, before Chapter 1 | S-tier, 1st place | A-tier |
Both sources agree that the Gladiator is in the top tier for PvP. They only differ on PvE. The more important column, though, is the scope of validity: neither of them is newer than the balance pass of 8 July 2026, and no tier list for the global version exists yet.
Once the global version launches, the tier lists will be rewritten. We will then update this article based on real data, not speculation. For now, you can find the full rating of all classes in the class overview and tier list.
Gladiator or Templar? And what about the Assassin?
The Gladiator sits right between a tank and a pure attacker, so players usually weigh two directions: do I want to be tougher (Templar), or do I want to deal more to a single target (Assassin)?
| Gladiator | Templar | Assassin | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Role according to game data | Tank/DPS | Tank | DPS |
| Weapon | Two-handed sword | Sword and shield | Daggers |
| Number of skills | 52 (43 + 9) | 41 (31 + 10) | 46 (37 + 9) |
| Damage type | Area | Low | Single-target burst |
| Survivability | High thanks to life steal | Highest | Lowest |
| Solo play | Very good | Safe but slow | Fast but risky |
| Difficulty | Medium | Low to medium | High |
| When to pick it | You want to stand on the front line and put up big area numbers | You want the party to rely on you | You want to kill specific targets and don’t mind dying |
The rule of thumb: the Gladiator is a compromise that works. He is not the best at anything, but he is not bad anywhere, and that is why he is the easiest of the three classes to play solo. You will find details on both alternatives in the Templar class guide and the Assassin class guide.
If AION 2 is your first MMORPG, it is worth checking first which classes forgive mistakes and which don’t. That is covered in the article on the best class for beginners.
What awaits the Gladiator at the global launch
Early access starts on 30 September 2026 for Founder’s Pack owners, and the full free-to-play launch for everyone is on 5 October 2026. The difference is five days. What the individual packs contain and whether they are worth it is covered in the article on early access and the Founder’s Packs.
The global version runs on PC only, through Steam and the PURPLE launcher. Details are in the platforms overview. The game launches with ten languages, and the skill and stat names in this article are the ones you will see in the English client.
On the Korean and Taiwanese versions, the Chapter 1 update raised the level cap to 50 and added a Pendant slot and Arcana slots. For the Gladiator, these are exactly the places where you fine-tune critical chance and attack speed, the stats the class relies on. NCSOFT has not said whether the global version will launch with this content. A Gladiator always charges the front line – and you can grab AION 2 merch from the GamersTogether shop with the same confidence.
If you don’t want to wait, you can try the Gladiator right now on the Asian version. How to get in is explained in the guide to playing on the Taiwanese server. After the global launch, we will update this article with the actual skill tree, numbers and stat splits from play.

FAQ
The Gladiator is a melee attacker with a two-handed sword whom the game data lists as a Tank/DPS hybrid. In practice he plays the role of a second tank: he deals area damage, heals for part of the damage he deals and, thanks to plate armor, holds out on the front line. He is one of the eight classes in the global version.
52 in total: 43 active and 9 passive, according to game data verified as of 31 July 2026. That is the most of all three melee classes: the Templar has 41 and the Assassin 46. A higher count does not mean harder gameplay, though, since a large part of them are specializations and variants of the basic abilities.
Yes, he is among the best-rated solo classes in AION 2. The reason is a combination of two traits: life steal keeps him alive without a healer, and area attacks let him kill several enemies at once. Solo farming is therefore faster and considerably less risky with the Gladiator than with the more fragile offensive classes.
Because he really is. It is a known trait of the class, confirmed even by NCSOFT’s own testing from 2025. The animations are heavy and the abilities ramp up slowly. The turning point comes with gear that adds attack speed: only then does the rotation click into place and the damage jump. It is not a build mistake but the class’s power curve.
It is the opinion of part of the community, not a proven fact. The claim comes from the Korean and Taiwanese meta after the Brawler class was added on 1 July 2026, an environment where he has been played for several months longer than in the global version. Two things contradict it: the PVPBank tier list for Season 2 ranks the Gladiator in PvP at first place in S-tier, and the balance pass of 8 July 2026 actually strengthened his personal damage.
Yes. The Zikel’s Blessing buff no longer affects the whole party and adds accuracy instead, the Murderous Burst passive now boosts your own critical damage, and Leaping Slam no longer costs mana. All of these changes came with the 8 July 2026 patch on the Korean and Taiwanese versions, and NCSOFT has not confirmed them for the global launch.
The Gladiator is a class where it pays to know what to expect at the start and what only comes once you have stacked attack speed. That is why we will review this guide again after early access starts on 30 September and after the full release on 5 October 2026, and add verified numbers. You will find the other AION 2 guides in the AION 2 guides section. Data verified as of 9 August 2026.
Skills are only half the Gladiator. The other half is the Daevanion board you fill in and the macros you bind your rotation to.
