Ancient Barrier is a Stjar clan faction quest that sends you up to the storm-lashed heights of Windsong Peaks in the Scorched Mountain Pailune range. The whole quest comes down to one puzzle: you have to get a broken lightning device working so the discharge jumps along a chain of pillars all the way to the central panel. The order matters. The discharge chains from pillar to pillar, so you can’t charge the third one until the first two are set correctly.
How to start the quest
The Stjar clan only offers you Ancient Barrier after you complete enough side quests in the Pailune region. If it isn’t in your journal, it’s not a bug: you’re missing the unlocking quests in the area. Work through the regular side quests in Pailune first and then come back.
Stock up on food and potions before you head up. The puzzle leads straight into a fight with the Titan, and there’s no point taking it on without supplies.
Step-by-step walkthrough
1. Northern pillar
Head to the northernmost part of the marked area. The pillar there is frozen in ice, so you can’t move it until you break the ice with Turning Slash (R1 + R2).
Once it’s free, move the pillar onto the pedestal with Nature’s Grasp. Then push the lever until the pillar points south, where the next tower is waiting.
2. First southern pillar
From the northern pillar, glide south. This one is already active, so just make sure its lever also points south. That sends the discharge on to the farther southern part of the area.
3. Second southern pillar
Keep going south until you find a pillar lying on the ground. Lift it onto the pedestal with Nature’s Grasp again, and once it charges, turn the lever west.
4. Western pillar
Go to the westernmost pillar and turn the lever until it points northeast. The discharge needs to hit the last coil, which sits directly below it.
5. Coil Status Panel
Return to the control panel in the center of the area. If the chain is complete, you’ll see lightning flowing through all the coils on the panel. Stand in the middle of the platform; it lights up and triggers a cutscene showing the way to the mountain summit.
When it doesn’t work: the three most common snags
The storm in the area makes the puzzle feel harder than it really is. Almost every problem comes down to one of these three things:
- The pillar won’t move. Either you’re not using Nature’s Grasp, or the pillar is still in the ice. The northern one needs Turning Slash first.
- You can’t tell whether the pillar is aimed correctly. A correctly aimed pillar sends a visible beam to the next tower. If the beam ends in empty space, keep turning the lever. In the rain the beam is the only reliable guide; trying to navigate by compass directions on the map is a waste of time in the fog.
- The panel doesn’t respond. Walk the chain backwards and check every pillar. A single lever pointing the wrong way is enough to stop the energy from getting through.
What comes after the puzzle
The open path leads to the summit, where the Titan is waiting. It’s one of the hardest fights in the game and also a test of whether you’re worthy of standing before a god. We recommend going through the stamina upgrades first, because every point of endurance will count in that fight.
